Best Surf Season (March - June)

As the Northern Hemisphere tilts into spring, La Jolla enters its prime window. The clash of lingering winter storms and building southern hemi swells delivers a potent mix of long period groundswells from both the North Pacific and the South Pacific. April and May stand out with average wave periods pushing into the 14-second range, offering powerful, clean lines. Offshore winds from the west become more frequent, with ideal conditions clocking in over 60% of the time. Expect consistent 1-1.5m waves that are fun, rippable, and firing, often groomed by light westerly breezes.

Fair Surf Season (July - October)

Summer and early autumn are dominated by consistent southern hemisphere swell (SSW through S). While the source is reliable, the energy often lacks the punch of winter swells, with average heights holding around 1.4m and periods dipping slightly to 13s. The trade-off comes from tropical storm activity in the East Pacific, which can spin up short-period, but sometimes larger, swell events. Wind quality drops as the thermal gradient weakens, with ideal offshore conditions occurring only about 40-50% of the time. Expect more light cross-shore winds and occasional glassy mornings – still surfable, but less consistent high quality.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

Winter brings the largest swells of the year from the North Pacific, primarily from the NNE direction. However, these swells are often accompanied by short to average periods (10-11s) and strong onshore winds from the northern quadrants. The combination of steep, choppy swell and frequent N to NNE winds (which are side-onshore for this east-facing beach) reduces wave quality dramatically. January and December see ideal wind percentages as low as 31-33%. While there are occasional clear days with offshore westerlies during post-frontal setups, the overall consistent surf quality is the poorest of the year. Small windows can still deliver fun-sized waves but patience is key.

December: Peak Winter Wind and Swell

December brings the true winter peak. NNE swells are at their maximum (29.6% of all swell, with most in the 1.5-2m and 2-2.5m ranges). The average period is only 10.4s, emphasizing local, short-period storm swell. Wave heights average 1.4m but often produce punchy, fast barrels when the wind is right. Unfortunately, the wind is rarely right – ideal time dips to 31%, the lowest of the year. N and NNE winds roar at 49% of the time, frequently in the 10-30kph range, blowing directly side-onshore and ruining surface quality. There is still a southern component (S+SSW=36.6%), but these swells are smaller. The best surf in December comes from a brief window after a cold front passes and strong offshore northwesterly winds (WNW, NW) set in, grooming the NNE swell into clean, powerful waves. Those clean days are rare but well worth the wait.
