Best Surf Season (May - September)

The peak of the dry season brings the most consistent combination of long-period groundswell from the Southern Ocean and reliable offshore wind regimes. During these months, the average wave period climbs above 13 seconds, delivering powerful, lined-up waves to Lances Left. The dominant swell is from the SSW and SW, directly into the exposed reef, creating clean, rippable faces. Wind ideal percentages reach their yearly highs, with May and June seeing nearly half the days with offshore breezes from the north through east. This is the prime window for scoring classic Lances Left barrels.

Fair Surf Season (April & October)

The transitional months bookending the dry season still see solid swell activity, but with increased variability in wind and swell direction. April offers excellent long-period energy (12.7s average) and a high percentage of SSW swell, though the wind ideal drops to 40%. October sees a similar pattern as the northwest monsoon begins to influence the region, bringing more westerly swell and occasional onshore winds. During these months, patience is key to picking the right window when the trades align offshore.

Low Surf Season (November - March)

The northwest monsoon dominates from November through March, resulting in a higher prevalence of onshore winds from the west and southwest. While swell direction remains favorable (mostly SW to W), the average wave periods drop into the 10-11 second range, indicating less powerful, often shorter period swell. Wind ideal percentages hover around 31-37%, meaning many days are affected by bumpy conditions. However, the region still receives consistent swell; it's just that the quality is less consistent than the dry season. Hardcore surfers can find fun sessions, especially when strong cold fronts in the Southern Ocean produce longer period pulses that break the onshore grip.

May: Dry Season Excellence

May sees the dry season firmly established. The average wave period hits 13.4s, wind ideal soars to 49%, and swell direction is heavily dominated by the SSW at 60.5%. Long-period groundswell from the Southern Ocean arrives with power and consistency. The SE trades (14.5% SE, 9.9% SSE) are present but not overpowering, and offshore winds from the north and east occur frequently. This is prime time for clean, hollow waves in the 0.5-1.5m range, often reaching 1.5-2m on stronger pulses.
