Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic storm track intensifies during autumn, and by October the average swell height at Langland Beach climbs above 1.2m with periods stretching into the 9-second range. This trend peaks in January and February, when average heights reach 1.5-1.6m and periods average 10.5-10.7s. While the dominant swell direction remains from the WSW and W (which wrap into the bay), the frequency of S to SW swell increases, offering cleaner, more direct lines. The ideal offshore wind from the north quadrant occurs roughly 12-15% of the time, often in the wake of passing cold fronts that deliver crisp, light north breezes. The combination of powerful, long-period groundswell and occasional high-pressure setups makes this the prime window for pumping waves at Langland.

Fair Surf Season (April, May, September)

As the North Atlantic begins to quiet down, spring and early autumn bring a transition period. April still holds onto a respectable 0.9m average swell with a 9.0s period and a notable 15% frequency of offshore winds – the same as the winter months. However, the fetch is weaker, and storm tracks shift north, making consistent SW swell less common. May sees a further drop to 0.8m and 8.3s, with ideal wind slipping to 12%. September marks a return toward autumn energy, with average swell lifting back to 0.9m and period to 8.1s, though the wind regime remains mostly onshore. These months offer occasional fun sessions when a solid SW pulse aligns with a north wind, but expect more grovelly, wind-affected days overall.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer settles in with the smallest and weakest surf of the year. Average swell height hovers around 0.7-0.8m, and period drops to 7.4-7.9s – choppy, underpowered conditions that rarely produce rideable waves above knee-high. The dominant swell direction remains WSW and W, but these are mostly short-period windswell pulses from frequent Atlantic lows racing to the north of the UK. Offshore wind opportunities are at their lowest (11-12%), and when it does blow from the north, the swell is often too small to create anything of consequence. On top of that, the prevailing wind is from the SW to WNW, which is directly onshore and messes up the wave face. Save your energy for the spring and autumn shoulders – summer is a time for flat spells and longboard fun at best.

January: The North Atlantic Roars

January brings the peak of winter energy to Langland Beach, with an average swell height of 1.6m and a long-period average of 10.7s. The vast majority of swell arrives from the WSW (39.1%) and W (18.3%) – directions that wrap into the south-facing bay, delivering powerful, grinding lines when the period pushes above 12s. Cleaner, more direct swell from the optimal S to SW quadrant contributes only about 11% of the total, but these are the gems that make the session. The wind is a mixed bag: onshore SW to W winds dominate (over 30% combined), ruining wave faces. However, offshore breezes from the north quadrant (N, NNE, NE, NNW) occur about 13% of the time, usually after a cold front clears. When a strong high pressure settles to the west, the combination of a solid SW groundswell and a light north wind creates epic conditions – hollow, punchy peaks that are a true treat for the experienced surfer.
