September sees a renewed pulse as autumn cools the Atlantic, bringing back 1.1m averages and 10.6s periods. While still capable of delivering fun, rippable surf with the occasional solid groundswell, the consistency and power of winter are missing. Wind patterns become less reliable, with ideal conditions occurring only 25-38% of the time. However, when a high-pressure system settles over the Bay of Biscay, the combination of glassy offshore winds and a moderate NW swell can produce some of the most enjoyable sessions of the year, with smaller crowds.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

The summer months are characterized by a dramatic lull in surf energy. Average swell heights hover around just 0.9m, and periods are a short 9-10 seconds, typical of local windswell and distant, weak groundswell. The swell direction is overwhelmingly from the NW (50-67% of the time), which while still optimal for the spot, lacks the size and punch due to the absence of strong Atlantic storms. The trade-off is that winds are often from the west and northwest (onshore), creating choppy, messy conditions. The ideal wind percentage drops to its annual low of 16-21%. This is a time for groveling on small-wave equipment, and most local surfers take a break or chase the rare tropical swell.
