Best Surf Season (October - December)

The Northeast Monsoon is in full swing by October, and while the prevailing wind direction shifts to a more easterly component, the frequency of lighter wind days and a subtle increase in southerly wind events makes this period the sweet spot for Lanuza. The average swell height climbs from a modest 0.7m in October to 1.2m by December, with wave periods often hovering in the 9.9-10.2s range, offering a punchy, rideable wave. The trick is timing the windows when the wind swings around to the S, SSW, or SW – those rare but precious offshore jewels that groom the NNE-facing beach into clean, lined-up sets. When the synoptic setup aligns, a push of NW or NNE groundswell from distant lows can combine with glassy mornings and deliver the best waves of the year.

Fair Surf Season (January - April)

As the heart of the NE Monsoon settles in from January through April, the surf potential remains consistent but the wind quality becomes the limiting factor. Average wave heights hold in the 0.9m to 1.3m range, and periods stay solidly in the 9s, but the wind is ideal only 17% to 35% of the time. The dominant wind direction is a stubborn E to ENE flow – a direct onshore for Lanuza – which tends to chop up the face and shorten the ride. Still, when a strong High pressure system stalls to the north, it can funnel a cleaner east-northeast wind that, while not perfectly offshore, can still produce workable conditions. The swell is predominantly from the ENE and NE quadrants, with a smattering of N and NNE energy that wraps in from time to time, making this a season of persistence rather than perfection.

Low Surf Season (May - September)

From May through September, the Southwest Monsoon takes over, and while this shift brings a dramatic increase in offshore wind potential – with ideal wind percentages peaking at 48% in May – the swell engine sputters. Average wave heights drop to a mere 0.5-0.7m, and the dominant swell direction shifts further east to E and even SE, which offers zero direct angle into the NNE-facing beach. The wave period actually remains respectable in the 8.6-9.9s range, indicating longer-period swell energy from distant storms, but the height simply isn't there to produce anything beyond a fun-sized, groveling wave. During this period, the few waves that do arrive are often from the N or NNE, generated by rare tropical disturbances, and if they coincide with the clean southerly winds, they can offer a fleeting, glassy session. But for the most part, summer is a time to focus on other activities or travel north for more exposed breaks.

May: The Offshore Goldilocks

May sees the highest percentage of ideal wind of the entire year, 48%, but the average swell height drops to just 0.7m with a period of 8.9s. The swell is dominated by E (27.4%) and ENE (62.7%) directions, with a small window of NE (6.4%) and NNE (1.2%). The waves are small, but the wind is often light and variable, with a strong southerly component (S at 8.1%, SSW at 4.5%, even SE at 11.8% which is cross-offshore). This creates sessions of perfect, clean little peelers ideal for high-performance surfing on a fun day. The small size limits the thrill, but the quality is high when the swell lines manage to wrap in from the east. Watch for distant Typhoon swells from the north that can briefly push the height up.
