Best Surf Season (May - June)

Late spring ushers in the most reliable window of opportunity at La Ocho. The winter storm track has faded, but the trade wind regime shifts just enough to allow for an uptick in offshore wind frequency from the south. Average swell heights hover around 0.8m with short, 6-second periods, so don't expect any barrels — but when the wind goes light offshore (S to SW), those otherwise choppy east-southeast windswells clean up into fun, rippable lines. May and June see the highest percentage of ideal wind (61-63%), giving you the best chance of scoring a session with groomed faces. It's not big, but it's consistent and smooth.

Fair Surf Season (July - October)

As summer deepens, the trade winds strengthen and the swell mix becomes more variable. July and August still see a decent proportion of offshore wind (46-49%), but the dominant east-southeast swell often arrives with a side-shore breeze that can make things lumpy. September and October bring slightly smaller average swell heights (0.7m) and a shift toward more south winds during the late hurricane season — when a distant tropical system pushes south swell, conditions can turn on, though such events are rare. Overall, this is the shoulder season: not terrible, but not reliably clean.

Low Surf Season (November - April)

Autumn and winter mark the low point for surf quality at La Ocho. The North Atlantic roars with powerful low-pressure systems, but the spot's north-facing orientation rarely catches that energy. Instead, the swell remains dominated by short-period, east-southeast windswell (0.8-0.9m, 6.2s). Worse, the wind is ideal only 35-42% of the time — meaning onshore and cross-shore winds from the east-northeast quadrant prevail, chopping up the wave face. December is the toughest month with just 35% favorable wind. While the rare passage of a cold front can swing the winds around to the south for a day or two, the overall pattern is marginal. If you're chasing quality, this is the season to steer clear.

January: The Winter Doldrums

January opens the year with a meager average swell of 0.9m and a short 6.2s period. The swell direction is overwhelmingly from the east (49.5%) and east-southeast (39.5%), with almost no north or northeast swell reaching the beach. Wind is ideal only 39% of the time; the predominant flow is from the east and east-northeast at 10-20kph, creating cross-shore to onshore conditions that leave the waves crumbly and bumpy. When a cold front pushes through and the wind swings to the south (offshore), the small east swell can clean up into weak but rideable lines. But those moments are rare. Expect mostly small, wind-affected surf.
