Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic fires on all cylinders from October through March, delivering a consistent barrage of powerful NW to WNW groundswells to La Salbaje. Average swell heights hover between 1.5m and 2.1m, with long periods (11-13s) that translate to heavy, well-formed walls. The real kicker is the wind: during these months, southerly quadrants (S, SSW, SW, WSW) blow offshore across the beach more than 30% of the time, cleaning up the faces and creating the glassy conditions this NW-facing setup craves. When a deep low spins up off Greenland and the jet stream aligns, we see epic, pumping surf that can push into the 2.5m+ range – true charging territory.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

April and September occupy a transitional zone. April sees the swell dial back to an average of 1.4m at 10.8s, with a mix of NW and WNW swell still dominating (over 60% combined). Offshore wind frequency dips slightly to 28%, but the lighter spring patterns often yield fun, rippable waves in the 1-1.5m range. September brings a subtle uptick in both swell height (1.2m) and period (10.3s), and actually boasts the highest ideal wind percentage of the year at 35%. This month can surprise with clean, long-period pulses as Atlantic hurricane remnants or early autumn storms send energy our way.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

From May through August, the surf at La Salbaje takes a summer siesta. Average heights bottom out around 1.0m and periods drop to 8-10s, producing smaller, fun-sized waves that are best for groveling and log riding. The dominant NW swell still rolls in (over 50% of the total), but the wind patterns shift: north and northwest winds – onshore for this beach – become more frequent, often ruining the surface texture. Offshore wind from the south is still present but less common (27-29%), so you’ll need to pick your windows carefully. Early mornings with light southerly breezes can still offer clean, playful conditions, but don't expect any heavy, pumping days.

September: The Turnaround

September marks the beginning of the transition back to better surf. Average height rises to 1.2m and period to 10.3s. NW swell still leads (51.8%), but there’s a noticeable increase in the 1-1.5m (20%) and 1.5-2m (10.2%) ranges. The wind stats shine: ideal offshore wind hits 35% for the month, the highest of any month. SSE (4%), S (4.4%), and SSW (4.1%) breezes are moderate and consistent. Onshore winds from the NW (7.7%) and WNW (12.3%) are still common, but the improved offshore percentage means more clean days. This is when the early autumn low-pressure systems start to wake up – expect fun, solid waves with long period swells from distant hurricanes.
