Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic delivers its most potent storms during the winter half-year, and Legzira sits perfectly in the firing line. From October through March, the average swell height consistently sits above 1.8 m, with periods frequently reaching the 12-13 second mark – that's powerful, long period groundswell. The dominant swell directions are a textbook mix of WNW, NW, and NNW, all of which wrap directly into the WNW-facing beach. At the same time, the frequency of offshore wind from the E, ESE, SE, and SSE quadrants peaks between 38% and 52% of the time, ensuring clean, groomed faces. This is when Legzira truly fires, offering pumping, heavy waves in the 1.5-2.5m range with occasional XL days over 2.5m.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

April and September act as transition months, bridging the active winter pattern with the sleepy summer lull. Swell heights drop slightly to an average of 1.5-2.0m, and periods shorten to around 10-11 seconds – still average to punchy and rideable. The wind becomes more variable, with ideal offshore conditions occurring only 22-27% of the time. While persistent onshore flow from the NW quadrant can ruin the surface, the occasional frontal passage or low-pressure system can still deliver a day of good, solid surf. These months reward patience and a flexible schedule.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

The summer months are the quietest of the year at Legzira. Swell heights average a modest 1.5-1.6m, and periods drop to the 8-9 second range – choppy, low, and often messy. The swell is overwhelmingly from the NNW, which tends to produce weak, short-period waves. More critically, offshore wind from the east becomes scarce, with ideal conditions occurring only 12-23% of the time. The prevailing wind is from the NNW to N, which blows directly onshore across the beach and ruins wave quality. Small, grovel-waves are possible on the better days, but this is generally a time to save your energy for the winter months.

January: Peak Winter Power

January is the heart of the North Atlantic storm track, and Legzira reaps the rewards. Average swell height hits 2.2m with a period of 13.1s, delivering powerful, long-period groundswell that breaks with authority on the sand bottom. The swell direction is dominated by NNW (34%) and NW (27.8%), both of which are right in the sweet spot for the WNW-facing beach. A good chunk also comes from WNW (7.4%), adding variety. Offshore wind from the E, ESE, SE, and SSE blows a healthy 49% of the time, led by SE (15.6%) and ESE (11.9%). This combination often yields clean, groomed conditions. When the wind cooperates, wave heights in the 1.5-2.5m range dominate, making for pumping, heavy sessions. Beware: NNW winds blow 11.9% of the time, ruining the surface.
