Lido Garda seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (November - February)

The heart of winter brings the most consistent surf to Lido Garda. Dominant high pressure over continental Europe often sets up a pressure gradient that funnels cool, northerly winds (Peler) down the lake, creating clean, offshore conditions. Swell from the west and southwest quadrants is most frequent, with average heights hovering around 0.9–1.0m and periods in the 5.5–5.8s range. While not long-period, these waves offer punchy, rideable walls, especially when the wind aligns from the north. December and January see the highest percentage of ideal wind (24% and 23% respectively), making this the prime window for scoring fun peaks with minimal chop.

Fair Surf Season (March, April, September, October)

Shoulder seasons provide a mixed bag. As the thermal balance shifts, the reliable northerlies weaken. March and April still see some decent swell from the west (average height 0.8m), but the wind more frequently swings southerly, trashing the wave quality. October picks up with a slight resurgence in swell energy as autumn storms brush the Alps, yet the ideal wind percentage drops to 16%. These months require patience – you may have to wait for a cold front passage to swing the wind north for a brief window of fun, groomed conditions.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer is the flat season. The lake is dominated by thermal heating, generating strong daily onshore breezes (Ora) from the south that make the water choppy and the waves weak. Average wave heights drop to just 0.5m and periods shrink below 4.5s, producing mostly messy, micro conditions. The percentage of ridable offshore wind plummets to 6-10%. Occasional weak swell from the west may roll in, but it's almost always accompanied by onshore wind – only the rare early morning north wind offers a brief, groveling session. This is the time to travel or take up other water sports.
