The wind regime, while often strong, offers the highest percentage of offshore flow from the N-NE quadrant, with ideal wind windows occurring 9-11% of the time. December and February lead the pack with 11% offshore probability, making these the prime months for scoring clean, powerful surf.

Fair Surf Season (April, May, September)

As the North Atlantic storm track begins to weaken or reawaken, the average swell drops to 1.1-1.5m with periods of 6.5-7.2s. While not as consistently powerful, windows of fun, rippable waves appear when a late-season or early-season low pressure system sends a pulse of SSW-SW swell. Offshore wind frequencies remain in the 8-11% range, offering periodic opportunities for clean conditions. April especially can surprise with solid swell and a decent shot at glassy mornings.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer brings the quietest surf to Lista. The Atlantic high pressure ridges northward, suppressing storm activity. Average swell heights bottom out at 1.1m and periods drop to 5.9-6.2s, producing mostly small, groveling waves. The dominant wind flow veers NW to WNW over 40-50% of the time, which is offshore for this SW-facing beach? Actually NW wind is side-offshore to offshore? Wait: optimal wind is N-NE, so NW is cross-offshore, but not ideal. Worse, the wind often cranks up to 20-40 kph making conditions choppy. The percentage of ideal offshore wind plummets to 6-7%, making it a struggle to find clean surf. However, occasional tropical remnants or unusual summer gales can provide a brief pulse of punchy swell, but these are rare.

February: Prime Time with 11% Offshore Chance

February mirrors January’s power but with a slightly lower average swell height of 2.0m, yet the period remains a solid 8.2s. The swell distribution shifts slightly: W and WNW still dominate (21.5% combined), but the favorable SSW-SW-WSW quadrant gains a bit more ground, totaling 14.6%. Good to pumping waves in the 1.5-2.5m range are plentiful. The wind statistics are more encouraging: offshore flow from N-NE occurs 5.5% overall, but adding ENE (7.4%) pushes the ideal sector to nearly 13% – tied for the highest of the year. When the wind clock is in the east (ENE-E-ESE: 24% combined), it blows offshore, grooming the swell into crisp peaky lines. However, strong WNW-NW winds blow at 19.2% of the time, often ruining the surf. Patience is key; wait for a east-to-northeasterly gradient that often develops behind a passing low.
