Long Sands in the UK is a spot that typically favors wind swells over ground swells, with the most consistent conditions occurring from late autumn through early spring. The best months for surfing are generally October through March, when swell activity is highest and the mean swell size hovers around 1.0–1.1m. During this period, wind swells dominate (66–73%), though winter months like December and January also see a slight uptick in ground swell contributions (13–14%). However, wind conditions are challenging year-round, with bad onshore winds dominating 84–89% of the time across all months, making clean sessions relatively rare. The worst conditions are in summer (June–August), when swell energy drops significantly (0.6–0.7m) and flat spells (No Swell) peak at 39–50%. While September and April offer marginal improvements over summer, they still suffer from smaller swells and poor wind reliability. For surfers willing to chase the occasional good day, late autumn to early winter provides the best balance of swell size and frequency, but even then, favorable wind days remain scarce.
