Best Surf Season (October - March)

Los Frailes fires best when winter's high-latitude storms send long-period swell from the south-southwest and the offshore wind machine cranks from the north. From October through March, a persistent high-pressure system over the Pacific Northwest channels cold fronts southward, generating consistent SSW to S swell with average periods often exceeding 10 seconds. The N to NW winds blow offshore over 63% of the time, grooming the waves into clean, punchy lines. Even though the average swell height hovers around 0.7m, the long periods (10-12s) produce fun-sized, rippable waves—perfect for a log or a fish. When a stronger storm aligns, look for solid 1-1.5m sets that make the spot come alive. This is the window to plan your trip.

Fair Surf Season (April - May)

As spring transitions, the north Pacific high weakens and the trade winds begin to influence the region. April still delivers consistent S swell with very long periods (13.8s) and offshore wind about 58% of the time, but the swell heights remain modest (0.7m average). May sees a drop in offshore wind frequency to 45% as the easterly trades pick up, introducing more bump on the surface. Swell direction shifts primarily to S, which still works, but the shorter intervals and occasional onshore flow from the SSE make conditions less predictable. You can still score clean mornings, but the afternoon seabreeze often ruins the party.

Low Surf Season (June - September)

Summer brings the dreaded onshore wind regime. From June through September, the dominant wind direction veers to the SSE and SE—blowing directly into the beach and turning waves into choppy, messy slop. Offshore wind frequency plummets to 26-39%. Swell is abundant from the S to SSE, with average heights climbing to 0.8-0.9m and periods still in the 12-13s range, but the surface texture is poor. While the Southern Hemisphere storms are active, their swell arrives with a sideband of onshore winds. Occasionally, a tropical cyclone or strong low pressure may align to provide clean NW wind and solid swell, but these are rare anomalies. For the most part, June through September is a write-off for quality surf at Los Frailes.

January: Winter's Clean Pulse

January's swell is dominated by NNW (40.3%) and S (14.5%) directions, but the SSE and S swells are the ones that actually wrap into the beach. The average wave period of 10.1s means the swell is powerful enough to produce rideable waves. Offshore winds from N and NW blow 37.9% of the time, keeping the surface glassy. However, note that a significant portion of the swell (29.5% from NNW) is actually in the 0.5-1m range—small but fun-sized. The combination of clean offshore flow and consistent S-SSE swell makes January a solid month for groveling to fun waves. The average height of 0.7m suggests mostly small waves, but the long period helps them hold up.
