Combined with a higher probability of offshore winds from the SW to WNW quadrants (ideal 16-33% of the time), this window provides the best chance for clean, well-shaped lines. However, the wind is still offshore a modest 13-22% of the time, and occasional late-season or early-autumn storms can send a pulse of longer-period swell. The wind remains favorable 31% of the time, with SW to WNW breezes keeping the surface clean when they blow. The constant pressure gradient between the European high and Mediterranean lows often generates moderate northeasterly winds, which are onshore and ruinous. But the few days when a cold front clears the wind offshore and a pulse of ENE swell arrives can produce surprisingly fun, rippable waves. It's a month of patience and sharp timing.
