Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during October through March, delivering the most substantial swell energy of the year to Machico. With average wave heights ranging from 2.0m to 2.6m and periods between 11.5 and 12.9 seconds, this is when the spot sees its most powerful, long-period groundswell. The dominant swell directions from the NW and NNW wrap nicely around the island, but the key ingredient is wind: when a strong Atlantic high-pressure system sets up, it can draw in offshore winds from the W, WNW, or NW, creating clean, lined-up surf. However, these windows are not constant – ideal wind conditions occur only 29% to 47% of the time during these months, so patience is required. When the synoptic puzzle aligns, the result is pumping, heavy waves that will light up any surfer's day. The chance of a full-on XXL episode is highest in this season, especially during January and December when average swell heights push past 2.5m.

Fair Surf Season (April - June & September)

As winter storms gradually weaken and the Azores High builds, April through June marks a transition to more consistent but smaller surf. Average wave heights drop to 1.5-2.1m, and periods shorten to 9.3-11.2s, reflecting a mix of weakening groundswell and increasing windswell. The wind patterns become more favorable for surfing, with ideal offshore flows occurring 51% to 64% of the time. The predominant wind direction shifts to N and NNE, which are side-offshore for Machico, often creating glassy or lightly textured conditions. The waves are still solid and rippable, especially during April and May with average heights around 1.7-2.1m. September also falls into this category, as the first autumn swell pulses begin to arrive while late summer winds remain favorable (58% ideal wind). Fair season offers reliable fun-sized surf with far fewer blowouts than full winter.

Low Surf Season (July - August)

July and August represent the quietest months for surf at Machico in terms of wave height and power. Average swell heights dip to 1.4m with periods under 9.1s, driven primarily by weak, short-period windswell from the N and NNE quadrants. While the percentage of favorable offshore wind is still high (56-58%), the waves are often too small to generate any real drive. The trade wind regime dominates, with winds blowing consistently from the N and NNE, keeping the sea surface fairly clean but offering little in the way of rideable face. This is the time for micro-session groveling or a backup plan if your expectations lean toward shoulder-high surf. The plus side is the consistency of clean conditions for other water activities and the occasional fun-sized day when a rare south-east quadrant swell sneaks in – but those remain very uncommon. For serious wave-chasers, this is the off-season.

January: Deep Winter Power

The North Atlantic storm track is at its peak intensity in January, generating a sprawling fetch that sends long-period groundswell across the ocean. At Machico, the dominant swell direction is from the NNW (20.6%) and NW (17.7%), producing an average wave height of 2.6m with an impressive 12.9-second period – that's powerful, heavy surf. These waves arrive with significant energy, but the southeast-facing orientation of the beach means the northwest swell refracts around the island, often delivering lined-up peaks with a bit of shelter from the full brunt. The biggest challenge is the wind: ideal offshore directions (W, WNW, NW, NNW) occur only 30% of the time. Most days the wind blows from the NE (13.7%) through ENE (10.4%), pushing hard onshore and chopping up the wave faces. When a high-pressure cell parks over the Bay of Biscay, it can drive a NW offshore breeze, transforming the surf into clean, rippable 1.5-2.5m monsters. Watch for those rare but rewarding windows – they are worth the wait.
