Best Surf Season (December - January)

The North Atlantic flexes its muscles during the heart of winter, and Majanicho reaps the rewards. December and January deliver the most consistent combination of powerful, groundswell from the NW and NNW directions, with average wave heights hovering around 2.1–2.2m and periods stretching into the 12–13s range. More importantly, this is when the offshore wind window (SSW, S, SSO) aligns most frequently, pushing ideal conditions to 22–25% of the time. Cold fronts sweeping across the Canary Islands often leave behind crisp, light southerly flow in their wake, transforming the beach into a clean, lined-up reef point. It's a short but sweet peak for those willing to brave the chill.

Fair Surf Season (October - March, excl. Dec-Jan)

The extended winter window from October through March still offers plenty of opportunities, though the percentages of truly clean days slip. November and February average 1.9–2.2m swell with 11–12s periods, but the offshore wind probability drops to 16–19%. March sees a further decline to 11% ideal wind as the trade wind regime strengthens. During these months, you'll often face a trade-off: the swell is present and powerful, but a persistent NE wind (onshore/cross-onshore) can chop up the surface. The key is to watch for systems that stall south of the islands, setting up a light S or SW flow. When that happens, the waves are still firing – heavy, long-period NW groundswells with clean walls.

Low Surf Season (April - September)

Summer and early autumn represent the leanest period for Majanicho. Average swell heights drop below 2m (1.4–1.9m) and wave periods shorten to 7.5–11s, indicating more local, weaker windswell. The dominant swell direction remains NNW to N, but the wind becomes a major obstacle: the trade winds blow from the NE and NNE with alarming consistency, often exceeding 20–30kph. Ideal wind percentages bottom out at 0–3% in the core summer months (June–August). During this stretch, the beach is almost always blown out – choppy, sectiony, and rarely clean. Occasional pulses from a distant low may produce a short window of rideable waves, but the odds are heavily stacked against quality surf. September shows a slight uptick in swell height (1.4m) and period (10s), a hint of the winter ramp-up, but still plagued by dominant NE winds.

January: The Winter Peak

January is the crème de la crème of the Majanicho surf calendar. The North Atlantic low-pressure track is at its most active, generating consistent, powerful NW and NNW groundswells that roll into the Fuerteventura coastline. With an average swell height of 2.2m and a period of 12.9s, you can count on pumping, long-period waves that hold their shape beautifully. The wind situation is surprisingly favorable: ideal S to SW winds occur 22% of the time, often in the wake of passing fronts. However, the dominant wind direction remains NNE (16.7%) and NE (22.7%), which are onshore for this NW-facing beach. When the winds clock around to the south, the beach lights up with clean, faceted lines. Swell directions from NNW (34.8%), NW (19.5%), and N (7.3%) combine to produce a wide range of sizes, from fun 1.5m waves to XL, heavy sessions over 2.5m. This is the month to watch the synoptic charts like a hawk and pounce on the rare windows of S wind.
