The North Atlantic storm track ramps up significantly from October onward, delivering a steady diet of powerful, long-period swell to Marinella's WNW-facing shores. Average wave heights consistently range from 1.3m to 1.8m, with periods averaging 11.3s to 13.0s—ideal for generating punchy, well-shaped waves off the sandbars. The percentage of favourable offshore wind (from S through WSW) peaks between 41% and 49%, thanks to frequent high-pressure systems over the Bay of Biscay that funnel clean, light winds across the coast. This is the prime window for epic sessions, with the most consistent combo of solid swell and workable conditions.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

As the seasons transition, April and September offer a mixed bag. Swell heights drop to around 1.1–1.2m and periods shorten to 10.6–11.0s, but the swell direction still favours the NW/WNW quadrant. The percentage of ideal wind dips to 29%, meaning more days with onshore flow from the W–NW. However, when a late-season low-pressure system aligns with a temporary ridge of high pressure, these months can produce surprisingly fun, rippable waves with lighter crowds. Keep an eye on the synoptic charts—the window for quality conditions narrows, but the reward can be worthwhile.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer brings a dramatic lull in surf energy. Average wave heights hover around a marginal 0.9–1.0m, and periods drop to the 9–10s range—often too weak to overcome the prevailing onshore winds. The percentage of offshore wind plummets to 15–23%, with strong thermal breezes from the WNW–NNW quadrant dominating the wind rose. These winds are directly onshore for Marinella, chopping up what little swell arrives. While occasional long-period groundswell from distant southern hemisphere storms can sneak in, they are rare and usually overshadowed by unfavourable wind. This is the time for longboard groveling or a road trip to find more reliable summer breaks.

May: Lighter Days, Grovel Time

May sees the average swell height fall to 1.0m and period to 10.1s, with ideal wind at just 23%. The swell direction remains primarily NW (50.1%) and WNW (40.8%), but wave heights are mostly in the 0.5–1.5m range. This is small-wave territory. The wind pattern tilts heavily onshore, with W, WNW, and NW winds combining for over 43% of the observations. Thermal effects start to kick in, creating afternoon seabreezes that further chop the surf. When a long-period swell from a distant storm coincides with a rare morning offshore wind from the E–SE, Marinella can offer clean, waist-high waves. But more often than not, May is a month for patience or a trip elsewhere.
