Best Surf Season (October - March)

The heart of the wet season brings the NW Monsoon to life, and for Medewi, that means a dramatic swing toward offshore wind conditions. With the wind blowing from the north through east-northeast a significant portion of the time, the wave face stays clean and the long-period groundswells from the SSW and SW wrap beautifully into the bay. Average swell heights hover in the 1.0 to 1.2m range, but the 12-14 second periods give them real punch. February and March shine brightest – the wind is ideal nearly 40% of the month, and the swell direction is locked in. This is when you can count on rippable, classic Medewi lefts with minimal chop.

Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)

As the monsoon transitions, the trade winds begin to build from the southeast, but the swell quality can still be solid. April and May see average swell heights climb to 1.1-1.2m and periods pushing 13-14 seconds, driven by deepening Southern Ocean lows. The catch: the wind starts clocking around to the ESE and SE more frequently, turning the lineup choppy and sideshore. However, the percentage of offshore wind (from the north) remains around 30-35%, so if you pick your windows, you can score fun, powerful waves before the onshore fog sets in. September offers a similar story – the swell is still pumping but the wind is ideal only 11% of the time, making it a gamble for the dedicated.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

The SE trade wind season hits full stride from June through August, and conditions at Medewi become a battle. While the average swell height peaks at 1.3-1.4m with 14-second periods – some of the most powerful swells of the year – the wind blows from the ESE and SE over 80% of the time. That puts the breeze directly onshore for this south-southwest-facing beach, creating choppy, bumpy faces that are tough to surf. The percentage of ideal offshore wind plummets to just 14-18%. When a rare northernly wind does align, the waves can be epic, but those days are few and far between. Overall, this is the most challenging period for consistently good surf.

December: Monsoon Peak, Classic Medewi

December is the heart of the wet season and delivers classic Medewi conditions. The NW Monsoon is fully established, bringing frequent offshore winds from the N through ENE. The wind ideal percentage is 18%, but the dominant wind directions are actually from the W (18.4%), WSW (15.3%), and SW (10.4%) – these are onshore, yet light to moderate. The northerly components (N, NNE, NE, ENE) total over 7%, which is significant. Swell direction is SSW (85.8%) and SW (13.3%), with average height 1.0m and period 12.4 seconds. The 0.5-1m range is 51.4%, but 1-1.5m is 45.4%, and there are occasional 1.5-2m sets (1.5% from SW). December offers consistent, clean, fun waves with plenty of corners to carve. It's the perfect month for intermediate to advanced surfers.
