Melbourne Beach seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
The Atlantic winter pattern brings consistent, rideable swell to Melbourne Beach, with average wave heights ranging from 0.8m to 1.0m and periods peaking near 8.6s. Cold fronts sweeping down from the north and high-latitude low-pressure systems generate pulses of NE to E swell that hit our east-northeast-facing beach head-on. While the prevailing wind during these months is often onshore from the east, the frequency of offshore west and southwest winds hits its annual high (22-24% of the time), offering clean, groomed waves during frontal passages and post-cold-front setups. This is when the spot delivers its most reliable, punchy surf.
Fair Surf Season (April & September)
These transition months see a tapering of winter swell energy, with average heights dropping to 0.8m and periods still respectable. April benefits from lingering NE swell and a slightly better offshore wind window (20% ideal), while September sees a spike in long-period E/ENE groundswell as early-season Atlantic storms spin up. However, onshore wind frequencies increase, making wave quality more inconsistent. Still, savvy surfers can score clean, chest-high sets when the synoptics align.
Low Surf Season (May - August)
Summer brings the doldrums of surf to Melbourne Beach. The average swell height drops to 0.5-0.7m, periods shorten to 7.6-8.0s, and the prevailing easterly trade winds blow almost constantly onshore (ideal wind only 11-15% of the time). The swell mix is dominated by small, short-period E/ESE windswell that barely reaches waist-high under the best conditions. This is a time for longboards, beginner waves, or scoring rare cleaner moments right before sunrise. The ocean goes into a summertime sleep, waiting for autumn cold fronts to reawaken it.
