The dominant SSW and SW swell trains align surprisingly well with the offshore wind directions (S, SSW, SW), and ideal wind frequencies hover between 22-26%. This synergy often produces clean, lined-up waves despite the non-optimal swell direction, as the long-period energy wraps into the NNE-facing beach. The Indian Ocean and South Atlantic lows fire up, sending robust swell trains while high-pressure systems stall, providing light offshore breezes. Fair Surf Season (December - February)

Summer months see average swell heights drop to 1.9-2.0m, with periods averaging 10.7-11.0s. While the swell is smaller and more inconsistent, the trade-off is a higher frequency of offshore winds – ideal wind conditions occur 29% of the time, the highest of the year. The wind pattern is dominated by light to moderate easterly and southwesterly flows, but when the seabreeze cycle cooperates, early mornings often glass off under light S to SW winds. The waves during this season are typically fun-sized and rippable, perfect for groveling on a shortboard or riding a twin fin. Expect occasional pulse from distant Southern Ocean storms to bring 1-1.5m fun waves with clean conditions.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Winter is the most challenging time for consistent quality at Millers. Swell heights peak at 2.3-2.4m with very long periods (12.2-12.5s), indicating powerful, heavy groundswell from the Southern Ocean. However, ideal offshore wind conditions drop to a meager 16-20%, with strong northwesterly and westerly winds prevailing. The wind rose shows significant contributions from WNW, NW, and NNW – these are directly onshore for Millers and ruin wave shape. When the wind does swing offshore from the SSW or SW, the spot can fire with pumping, hollow waves (1.5-2.5m range), but such windows are rare and often fleeting. Persistent winter storms create a stormy, mixed-up sea state, making it a season for the patient and experienced surfer waiting for that elusive clean day.

April: Deep Autumn Building Energy

April sees an average swell height of 2.1m with a period of 11.7s, reflecting the onset of more consistent long-period groundswell. SSW swell dominates at 27.8%, closely followed by S (16.2%) and SW (11.6%). Notably, SW swell above 2.5m makes its first significant appearance at 0.6%, hinting at larger winter swells to come. Ideal wind frequency drops slightly to 25%, as the wind pattern shifts more westerly – WSW (18.8%), W (11.7%), and SW (7.9%) are prominent. The offshore wind directions (S, SSW, SW) account for about 13% of the wind, meaning ideal days are less frequent but more rewarding. When a cold front passes and winds swing southwesterly, followed by a clearing high, Millers can see clean, powerful waves in the 1.5-2.5m range.
