Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during these months, and Mirleft's northwest-facing shores bear the brunt of the winter fury. Powerful extratropical storms spinning off the US East Coast and Greenland send consistent, long-period swell from the NW-NNW quadrant, with average heights hovering around 2m and periods often exceeding 12s. The crucial ingredient? Offshore winds from the south to southwest quadrant blow clean across the points, with ideal wind frequency peaking at 51% in December. This is prime time for Mirleft, when the combination of solid swell and glassy conditions aligns for epic sessions.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

As the seasonal transition takes hold, the swell machine slows down but doesn't shut off. April sees a drop to 21% ideal wind as the trade wind pattern strengthens, but residual winter energy still delivers average 1.9m swell at 10.9s, dominated by NNW swell. September offers a taste of the upcoming winter with a bump in period to 10.1s and 24% offshore wind chances. These months are for the dedicated surfer willing to navigate inconsistent windows, but the rewards can be clean, fun-sized waves.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer brings the Azores High pressure system firmly over the region, suppressing storm activity and shifting the wind regime. Swell direction becomes overwhelmingly NNW (65-96% of all swell), but heights drop to 1.4-1.5m and periods shorten to 8-9s – typically weak, short-period windswell. Worse, the wind is predominantly onshore from the N-NW, with ideal offshore wind chances plummeting to between 11% and 21%. Mirleft becomes a shadow of its winter self, with small, choppy conditions that rarely inspire. Kite and windsurfers may find their element, but surfers should look elsewhere or wait for winter.

February: Consistent Winter Swell

February maintains the winter momentum with an average 2.1m swell at 12.9s. The swell direction shifts slightly more towards NNW, now accounting for 34.0% (vs 31.3% NW). Ideal wind drops a bit to 41%, but the SE and ESE winds still provide reliable offshore flow. The biggest difference is a slight increase in onshore NNW wind events (14.5% of the time) compared to January. Still, the long-period groundswell from the NW continues to pump, and when the southerly offshore winds kick in, expect clean, powerful waves breaking on the points.
