Best Surf Season (May - September)

The cool months bring a marked improvement in surf quality at Moruya Breakwall. Dominant high-pressure systems track further north, ushering in a regime of strong westerly winds (SW, W, WNW) that blow clean offshore across the east-facing breakwall. Swell periods climb to an average of 9.2-9.3 seconds, delivering more powerful, punchy waves. The predominant swell direction becomes more variable, with a healthy mix of E, ESE, SE and even S swells. While S swells are not ideally oriented, the long period and offshore wind often bend them into the break. Consistent 1-1.5m surf is the norm, with frequent fun-sized to solid waves. The combination of clean conditions and punchy swell makes this the prime window for Moruya.

Fair Surf Season (April & October)

April and October mark the transitional periods. The wind patterns begin to shift, with a higher likelihood of offshore westerlies in April (34% ideal) and a decent chance in October (24%). Swell periods are still respectable (8.9s in April, 8.2s in October) and average heights hover around 1.2m. April often sees a late burst of east coast lows, generating solid E to ESE swell with clean conditions. October starts to see more northerly winds again, but occasional cold fronts push through, offering windows of clean surf. These months can deliver quality sessions, but consistency drops compared to winter.

Low Surf Season (November - March)

From November through to March, the Tasman Sea is dominated by a northeasterly flow associated with the subtropical ridge. Winds frequently blow from the NNE, NE and N (onshore for the east-facing breakwall), making conditions often choppy and bumpy. The average ideal wind percentage sits at a meager 15-17% during the peak summer months of December-February. Swell periods are shorter (7.9-8.6s), producing less powerful, often messy waves. While there is plenty of swell from the E and ENE, the accompanying onshore winds usually ruin the ride. Early mornings can offer a small window of lighter winds, and occasionally a tropical cyclone in the Coral Sea will send a long-period E swell, but these are infrequent. This is the time to wait for a westerly change or a rare east coast low to inject quality.

December: Summer Lull

December is much like November – summer heat and onshore winds dominate. The average period inches up slightly to 8.0s, but the ideal wind percentage is the lowest of the year at 15%. Swell from the ENE is plentiful, but it's often blown out by northeasterly winds. Morning sessions can offer a brief window of lighter breeze, but generally, the surf is small and choppy. A tropical cyclone can provide a rare clean swell, but these are not dependable. This is the low point of the year for Moruya Breakwall.
