During these months, the subtropical ridge shifts south and the dominant trade wind flow weakens, allowing more frequent outbreaks of offshore west to northwesterly winds over the Maldives. Swell from the southeast quadrant, generated by distant storms in the Southern Ocean and the Roaring Forties, reliably marches up the fetch and delivers clean, long-period groundswell. Average wave heights hover in the 1.2–1.3m range with periods often exceeding 10 seconds, providing fun, rippable conditions on the reef. The wind is ideal over 50% of the time, creating grooming offshore flow that keeps the faces clean. This is the go-to window for consistent, quality waves at Muli.

Fair Surf Season (September - November)

As the northern fall arrives, the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) begins its southward migration, and the monsoon transition brings a mix of conditions. Swell heights climb to 1.4–1.6m as the Southern Hemisphere storm tracks become more active, but the wind regime becomes less reliable. While west to northerly offshore flow still occurs around 33–43% of the time, the increasing influence of the northeast monsoon introduces more variable winds. Expect a blend of clean, long-period swells interrupted by periods of onshore breeze. The quality is more hit-or-miss, but the potential for excellent sessions exists when the timing aligns.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

The heart of the southwest monsoon descends upon Muli during these months. The average swell height actually peaks at 1.6–1.8m with long periods, indicating powerful Southern Ocean energy. However, the prevailing wind is dominated by the southwest monsoon, blowing directly onshore or cross-shore from the west-southwest through south. Ideal offshore wind from the west/northwest is present only 20–29% of the time. This means that most days, the waves, while powerful, are blown out with choppy conditions, ruining the quality. Only occasional southwest monsoon breaks offer short windows of clean surf. This is the time for the committed surfer who is willing to dodge the wind.

July: Winter's Core, Tough Conditions

July is the heart of the southwest monsoon, and ideal wind hits a low of 23%. Swell height peaks at 1.8m with a period of 11.2s, offering the most consistent size of the year. Direction is heavily concentrated in SSE (40.8%) and S (43.3%), with most waves in the 1.5–2.5m range—pumping and heavy. Wind is a challenge: the dominant flows come from SE (16.2%), SSE (16.2%), and S (10.6%), all onshore. There is a sliver of NW (2.9%) and WNW (4.4%) offshore flow, but it's infrequent. The rare days when a westerly wind change occurs produce firing, thick lefts and rights on the reefs. For the average surfer, this month is more about monitoring forecasts and being ready to move when the stars align.
