Best Surf Season (December - February)

The winter months bring the most consistent and surfable conditions to Newport Beach. During this period, the North Pacific storm track is fully active, generating long-period swell (averaging 12-13s) from the west and west-southwest. While pure west swell isn't ideal for our southwest-facing shores, the long periods allow the energy to wrap into the lineup, producing solid, rideable waves in the 0.5-1.5m range. Critically, offshore winds from the north quadrant (N, NNE, NE, ENE) occur 33-43% of the time, grooming the surface into clean, glassy conditions. This is prime time for peak winter sessions, especially when a strong storm aligns with a high-pressure system over the interior.

Fair Surf Season (March, October, November)

These shoulder months offer a mixed bag. March still receives powerful winter swell (avg. 1.0m, 12.5s) but sees a drop in ideal offshore wind frequency to around 21%. October and November see a resurgence of offshore winds (20% and 35% respectively) combined with a solid mix of south and southwest swell. The pattern is less reliable than deep winter, but when a cold front passages aligns with a developing high, you can score fun, rippable waves with good period. These months require a keen eye on the forecast to catch the windows of clean surf.

Low Surf Season (April - September)

From April through September, Newport Beach experiences its most challenging surf conditions. The dominant swell sources shift to the south and southwest as Southern Hemisphere storms fire up, providing consistent long-period groundswell (avg. periods 13-14s) in the 0.8-1.0m range. However, the predominant wind flow becomes onshore, with westerly and west-southwesterly breezes blowing 70-80% of the time. This combination creates choppy, messy surface conditions that ruin wave quality. While there are occasional clean mornings with a light easterly or offshore breeze, they are rare (only 2-13% of the time). This is the season for the dedicated surfer who is willing to brave the onshore bump or wait for the fleeting moments when the wind aligns.

December: Winter Solstice: Peak Offshore Wind Frequency

December marks the peak of the offshore wind season. The average wave period is 12.3s, average swell height 0.8m. Swell is predominantly from the west (42.6%) and west-southwest (33.4%), with southwest (16.0%) and even some south-southwest (3.8%) mixed in. The key stat: ideal offshore wind frequency reaches 43%, the highest of the year. North (7.0%), north-northeast (8.5%), northeast (6.4%), and east-northeast (4.0%) winds are common, often light and perfect for grooming. The long-period west swell wraps around the jetties and breaks cleanly. December is consistent and high-quality. As the winter solstice approaches, the storm track is at its most active, producing numerous swell events. The combination of frequent offshore winds and solid long-period swell makes December arguably the best month for surfing at Newport Beach.
