Best Surf Season (April - October)

The heart of the surf season at Ninjas/Piddlies unfolds during the southwest monsoon, from April through October. During this period, the prevailing winds swing around to the west and northwest, blowing directly offshore from the land and grooming the waves to perfection. The Indian Ocean churns with long-period swell generated by distant storms in the Southern Ocean and the Indian Ocean itself, sending consistent groundswell in the 1-1.5m range with periods often exceeding 8 seconds. The dominant swell directions from the south-west quadrant wrap beautifully into this east-facing reef, producing clean, punchy waves. This is the time to plan your trip, with June through August offering the most reliable combination of size, period, and offshore winds. The Southern Ocean roar peaks during these months, and the Maldives reaps the rewards with excellent surf.

Fair Surf Season (November - March)

As the northeast monsoon settles in from November through March, the dynamics shift dramatically. The trade winds turn to blow from the east and northeast, directly onshore at this east-facing break, making for choppy, less appealing conditions. Swell is still present, but it is predominantly short-period windswell from the east (ENE) generated by those very same trades. While the occasional westerly wind event or a distant groundswell from the north can provide a brief window of clean waves, the overall consistency and quality take a hit. March sees a transition with increasing offshore wind percentages, offering a glimmer of hope as the season shifts.

Low Surf Season (January - February)

January and February represent the low point of the surf calendar. The northeast monsoon is in full force, with onshore winds blowing over 90% of the time. Swell heights average just under 1m with short periods (6.7s), producing weak, choppy conditions that rarely offer quality. The rare window of offshore wind from the west is fleeting and often accompanied by minimal swell. For dedicated surfers, this is a time for repairs and exploration, but not for consistent waves. The few scraps from passing lows in the north Indian Ocean occasionally bring a pulse, but the odds are stacked against good surf.

May: Swell Builds, Quality Improves

May is a standout month as the southwest monsoon fully establishes. Swell heights average 1.1m with a period of 7.5s. The dominant swell directions now come from the west and southwest, with WSW (22.9%), SW (16.6%), and W (15.8%) leading the way. These are the optimal swell directions for Ninjas. Wind remains offshore from the west, with W (35%), WSW (32.1%), and WNW (15.3%) dominating. Ideal wind is present 43% of the time. The waves are fun, rippable, and often clean. This month sees a great balance of swell and wind, making it a prime time for a trip.
