Best Surf Season (May - August)

The heart of the Southern Hemisphere winter unleashes its full potential at North Beach. As deep low-pressure systems march east across the Southern Ocean, long-period groundswells become the norm, with average wave periods climbing well into the 10–11 second range. The synoptic pattern also drives a marked increase in offshore wind frequency, with the SW–WNW quadrant blowing cleanly over 50% of the time. This combination of raw power and groomed faces transforms the beach into a consistent, high-quality wave factory. While some swell arrives from the south, the dominant E–ESE pulses wrap beautifully into the ENE-facing coastline, delivering steep, punchy walls in the 1–2 metre range—perfectly suited for carving and tube riding.

Fair Surf Season (March - April & September - October)

The shoulder months offer a tantalising blend of winter leftovers and summer transition. During March and April, the Southern Ocean is still active, and long-period groundswell (9–10 seconds) mixes with a wider range of directions. However, offshore wind windows narrow to 30–40%, meaning surfers must time the passing cold fronts carefully. September and October see the spring flush, where fresh SW winds often precede the arrival of solid, clean groundswell, but the surf becomes less consistent as the seasonal storm track weakens. These months reward patience: when the pieces align, you can score flawless, rippable waves with fewer crowds.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

The summer months are a tough stretch for North Beach enthusiasts. A persistent high-pressure ridge over the interior generates a strong, thermally-driven NE–ENE flow that blows directly onshore for the majority of the time. Ideal offshore wind (SW–WNW) plummets to just 25–28%, and the average wave period drops to a marginal 8–9 seconds. Swell trains are dominated by short-period windswell from the east, which, when combined with onshore chop, creates messy, less powerful surf. Occasional pulses from distant tropical lows can offer relief, but overall, the summer season is best reserved for equipment checks and planning winter missions.

December: Summer Onslaught

December marks the full arrival of the Southern Hemisphere summer. The average swell is 1.6m with a period of just 8.7s—the lowest of the year. Swell comes primarily from SSE (20.2%), E (18.6%), SE (16.7%), and S (15.7%), but the short period means these are mostly windswells. The ideal wind percentage is a meager 26%. Onshore winds from NE (18.8%) and ENE (14.7%) dominate, totaling 33.5% of the wind. Offshore winds (SW–WNW) are rare at 8.6%. The result is a month of small, bumpy surf with occasional fun-sized waves if a tropical cyclone in the Indian Ocean sends a long-period swell across the Mozambique Channel. Those are the glimmers of hope in an otherwise lackluster month. Best to enjoy the beach in other ways until autumn.
