Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life from October through March, delivering the most consistent and powerful swell to Ofir's west-facing shores. Average swell heights range from 2.1m to 2.7m with periods often exceeding 11 seconds, fueled by strong extratropical storms tracking across the Atlantic. The NAO index tends to be positive during this window, steering the storm track toward the Iberian Peninsula. Combined with ideal wind frequencies above 44% (peaking at 53% in December), this is prime time for big, clean surf. Expect pumping WNW and NW swells with offshore winds from the west-southwest to northwest — the perfect recipe for hollow peaks.

Fair Surf Season (April, May, September)

Transition periods bring a mixed bag. April and May see average swell heights dropping to 2.1m and 1.7m respectively, with periods shortening to 10-11 seconds. September marks the beginning of the autumn ramp-up, with 1.6m average swell and 10.4s periods. Wind conditions become less reliable, with ideal wind percentages falling to 27-33%. While you can still score fun, rippable waves, especially on longer-period W and WNW swells, the consistency takes a hit. Early mornings often offer the cleanest conditions before the sea breeze kicks up.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer months are the quietest at Ofir. Average swell heights bottom out at 1.4m in July and August, with periods dipping below 9 seconds. The swell is predominantly from the NW and NNW, which still wraps in but lacks the power of winter swells. To make matters worse, ideal wind frequencies drop to a mere 16-19%, with strong northerly winds (NNW, N) dominating over 40% of the time, creating onshore chop. While there may be occasional clean windswell windows, this is generally a time for smaller boards and finesse — or a strategic trip elsewhere.

July: Deep Summer Funk

July is the lowest point of the year at Ofir. Average swell height bottoms at 1.4m and period drops to 8.6s — essentially windswell territory. The swell is overwhelmingly from NW (37.5%) and NNW (35.7%), with little to no energy from other directions. Ideal wind is a mere 16%, with stiff NNW winds (31.1%) and N winds (14.4%) dominating. Expect mostly small, choppy surf with rare clean windows. If you're chasing waves, this is the time to explore sheltered spots or plan a trip elsewhere. Small-wave gear is a must.
