Best Surf Season (August - November)

The late summer and autumn months bring the most consistent and high-quality surf to Omaezaki. This window is defined by the peak of the typhoon season in the Northwest Pacific, which churns out powerful, long-period groundswells from the south and southwest – the optimal directions for this SSW-facing beach. September stands out as the crown jewel, boasting an average wave period of 9.2 seconds and the highest percentage of ideal offshore winds (22%), often delivered by post-typhoon northerly breezes. October and November offer the best wind statistics (26% and 25% ideal respectively), frequently pairing clean offshore NW flow with solid E to SE swell that wraps into the coast. When the stars align, you get the classic Omaezaki combo: big, clean lines from a distant storm with light offshore wind – pure perfection.

Fair Surf Season (March - July & December)

During this transitional period, the surf is a mixed bag, with plenty of rideable days but less consistency. From March through May, the westerly wind belt strengthens, pushing frequent low-pressure systems across Japan. This brings a mix of short-period windswell from the W and WNW (often onshore) interspersed with cleaner, longer-period pulses from the southern quadrants as spring storms track south. Wave heights average around 1.1-1.3 m, and periods sit in the 7-8 second range, offering punchy, fun-sized waves. June and July see the first arrivals of summer typhoon swell, but the dominant wind regime shifts to E and ENE, creating side-shore conditions that keep the surface bumpy – still surfable, but not pristine. December continues the fair trend with colder air and strong offshore wind events (N to NW) that groom the swell, though the average period dips to 7.3 s and the ideal wind window shrinks to just 16%. Look for winter cold fronts to deliver the best sessions during these months.

Low Surf Season (January - February)

The heart of winter is the most challenging time for consistent, high-quality surf at Omaezaki. The dominant weather pattern is dominated by the Siberian High, which drives relentless north-westerly winds that are strongly onshore (52% of January winds are from the WNW at 40-50 kt). While the swell height holds steady at 1.3 m, the period is short (6.6-6.8 s) and the wave energy is mostly messy, short-period windswell. What little swell makes it from the south is quickly chopped up by the cross-wind. The ideal offshore wind window (from the N to NE) is tiny (14-17%), so you really have to pick your windows – often right after a cold front passes and the wind briefly swings NW then turns offshore. These rare clean days produce short but punchy waves on the sandbanks, but overall, the low season demands patience and a sharp eye on the forecast.

September: The Crown Jewel of Omaezaki

September is the absolute peak of the year for premium surf. The average wave period remains at 9.2 s, and the ideal wind window expands to 22% – the best onshore/offshore ratio of any month. Swell direction is still heavily focused on the south-east to south: E (13.4%), ESE (19.7%), SE (17.0%), SSE (14.1%), S (13.0%). While the pure S and SSW percentages are lower than August, the combination of long period, consistent swell, and the highest frequency of offshore NW winds creates an incredible number of perfect days. The wind pattern shows a notable decrease in the WSW-SW onshore flow (only 7.0% and 8.6% respectively), replaced by more ENE (23.9%) and NE (6.6%) – good cross-shore or offshore directions. This month you can expect clean, powerful waves in the 1-1.5 m range almost daily, with frequent pulses of 2 m+ when a typhoon delivers the goods. September is the month every Omaezaki local circles on the calendar – it consistently delivers the magic combination of long swell and offshore wind.
