Best Surf Season (October - March)

Oualidia's surf season really comes to life when the North Atlantic begins its winter roar. From October through March, the combination of powerful long-period groundswells and a significantly higher frequency of offshore winds creates the most consistent and high-quality waves. The average swell height sits comfortably in the 1.7m to 2.2m range, with periods often exceeding 12 seconds, bringing powerful, bowling lines that peel perfectly along the sandbanks. The Azores High and Icelandic Low set up a classic pressure gradient, funnelling frequent extratropical storms across the North Atlantic. These generate WNW to NNW swells that wrap beautifully into Oualidia's north-west facing bay. Critically, this period also sees the highest percentage of ideal offshore winds — from the S, SSW, SW, and WSW — thanks to continental high-pressure systems settling over Morocco. December and January are the statistical peaks, with nearly half the days offering clean, offshore conditions. When that sweet spot aligns — a solid NW swell with light southerly winds — Oualidia absolutely fires.

Fair Surf Season (April & October)

The transitional months of April and October present a mixed bag but still hold considerable potential for the savvy surfer. The swell machine is still churning, though with slightly less intensity. In April, the average swell drops to 1.8m with a period around 11 seconds, offering punchy, rippable waves but with increased onshore winds from the north. October is the start of the upswing, with average swell at 1.7m and period climbing back above 11 seconds. Both months see about a 27% chance of offshore winds in October (ideal) and only 14% in April, meaning you must pick your days carefully. The trade-off is lighter crowds and more manageable swell sizes, making these months a good window for surfers seeking cleaner, fun-sized waves without the full-on winter power. The weather pattern is more variable as the seasons shift, so keeping a close eye on synoptic charts is key.

Low Surf Season (May - September)

The late spring through early autumn (May to September) is a challenging period for surfers at Oualidia. The North Atlantic storm track retreats northward, leading to a dramatic drop in both swell size and period. Average wave heights shrink to the 1.3m to 1.5m range, with periods often below 10 seconds — resulting in weak, short-period, and generally unsatisfying waves. The bigger issue, however, is the wind regime. The thermal low over the Sahara and the strengthening of the Azores High produce persistent, strong north to north-easterly winds that blow directly onshore at this north-west facing beach. Offshore wind percentages plummet to as low as 2% in July, meaning the vast majority of days are plagued by bumpy, choppy, or even straight-out blown-out conditions. While a rare south-westerly wind shift or a tiny window of dawn patrol glass might offer a marginal moment, this is generally the time to service your board and enjoy the warm Moroccan sun from the shore. A few small, weak NW pulses can still provide groveling waves for the extremely keen, but expectations should be set to low.

March: Transitional Swell, Still Good

March marks the beginning of the transition out of the peak winter season, but Oualidia still sees excellent swell. The average swell height is 2.1m with a 12.4-second period – still in the powerful long period category. Interestingly, the dominant swell direction shifts slightly, with NNW (32.1%) overtaking NW (28.8%) as the primary angle. This is still ideal for the bay. Wave heights remain solid, with a high percentage in the 1.5m to 2.5m range. The catch is the wind: ideal offshore wind drops to 27%. The north-east trade wind influence strengthens, with NE (22.2%) and NNE (20.1%) becoming more frequent and often stronger. This means onshore or cross-onshore conditions become more common, making it crucial to time your sessions carefully. The offshore windows (SSW: 3.3%, SW: 6.8%, WSW: 4.9%) still occur, particularly in the mornings or when a low pressure system passes close to the coast. March is about being selective – wait for a southerly wind to coincide with a NNW groundswell, and you’ll score.
