Best Surf Season (May - August)

The heart of the South African winter roars to life during these months, delivering the most consistent and powerful swell of the year. With average wave heights climbing to 2.8-2.9m and periods pushing into the 12.4-12.6s range, the Southern Ocean storms align perfectly to generate long-period SW, SSW, and occasionally WSW swells. While the dominant swell direction from the SW quadrant might seem off-angle for this west-facing beach, the prevailing southeast winds (SE, SSE) provide a clean, offshore texture, grooming the waves into well-shaped lines. This is when Outer Kom truly lives up to its reputation as a world-class wave, with frequent three-to-four wave sets rolling through in the 1.5-2.5m range, offering firing, pumpy conditions. The synoptic pattern features a semi-permanent South Atlantic high pressure system that strengthens the persistent southeast trade winds, creating a classic winter setup. The Indian Ocean also sends occasional long-period SW swell, adding variety. This is the prime window for barreling, powerful surf.

Fair Surf Season (March - April & September - October)

The transition months offer a mixed bag but still plenty of good days. In March-April, average swell heights maintain around 2.3-2.4m with periods of 11.7-12.2s, as winter storms begin to stir or the lingering autumn lows send pulses. The wind is ideal 11-16% of the time, with the southeast flow still dominant but occasionally interrupted by lighter northwesterlies that can spoil conditions. The swell direction remains primarily from the SW sector, but the frequency of smaller, fun-sized days (1-1.5m) increases, making it a great time for grovelers and technique. In September-October, the opposite transition occurs as spring arrives. Swell heights average 2.4-2.7m with periods dropping to 11.6-12.1s. The wind quality degrades slightly (9-12% ideal) as the high pressure weakens and cold fronts become less organized. However, when a strong low-pressure system stalls south of Africa, it can deliver a late-season pumping swell with favorable east-northeast winds. These months require more patience but reward the committed surfer with occasional epic sessions.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

The summer months bring a dramatic shift in the weather pattern. The South Atlantic high retreats, and the tropical Indian Ocean influences take over, reducing the frequency and power of swell. Average wave heights hover around 2.3m with periods dropping to 11.1-11.3s – still rideable but decidedly less consistent and punchy. The dominant wind swings to the south and southeast, but now a significant portion of the wind comes from the NW-NNW sector (bad onshore for Outer Kom), and the percentage of ideal wind plummets to just 7-8%. Much of the swell arrives from the SW, but the wind is often cross-onshore from the north, turning the normally clean lines into messy, chopped-up waves. Occasional pulses from the west or northwest (the preferred swell directions) can produce clean, long-period waves when the rare east wind aligns, but these are the exception. Summer is the time for the casual surfer or those happy with smaller, groveling waves. The water is warm, but the quality rarely reaches the winter standard.

June: Peak Winter Power

June is the pinnacle of the winter season. Average swell height reaches 2.8m with a period of 12.4s, and the distribution now shows significant energy in the >2.5m category, especially from SW (1.6%) and WSW (1.1%). The swell is heavy, powerful, and long-period – exactly what the spot needs. The dominant direction is SW (19.2%) and WSW (10.9%), with a good chunk of W swell as well (2.9%). This is the ideal scenario for Outer Kom: a solid west-northwest component combined with southeast wind. The wind ideal percentage remains at 19%. The wind rose shows a dominant SE to SSE flow (12.1% SE, 7.0% SSE) but also a notable increase in NW (11.2%) and NNW (16.0%) – these are the fronts that bring the swell. The key is that the wind can turn onshore quickly after a front passes. But when the post-frontal high moves in and the wind clocks to the SE, the conditions become world-class. This is the month for charging the heavy, hollow waves of Outer Kom.
