Best Surf Season (October - March)

Papara comes alive during the Southern Hemisphere summer as the trade wind regime relaxes, allowing more frequent offshore flow from the N to NNW quadrants. Swell heights average between 1.7m and 2.0m with long-period energy (11-12s) from the S/SSE/SSW, wrapping nicely into the SSW-facing beach. The percentage of ideal surfing wind climbs to 34-38%, making these months the most consistent for clean, groomed waves. When a strong low pressure spins up south of Tahiti, watch for pumping 1.5-2.5m sets with offshore winds – that's when Papara fires.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

Transitional months bring a spike in swell size (April averages 2.1m, September 2.1m) and period (12.9s and 12.2s, respectively) as winter storms begin to build or fade. However, the wind pattern becomes less predictable. Offshore flow occurs about 35% of the time in April, but drops to 21% in September. You'll still score punchy, rippable waves, but expect more days with cross-shore or onshore streaks from the E/ESE that can chop up the surface. Pick your windows wisely.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Winter in Tahiti delivers the largest average swells of the year (2.2-2.3m) and impressive periods (12.3-12.9s), predominantly from the S through SSW – perfect directions for Papara. Yet the persistent E to ESE trade winds become dominant, blowing directly onshore or cross-offshore, gutting wave quality. Ideal offshore wind days plummet to 19-26%, making clean sessions a precious commodity. When a rare cold front pushes north and flips the wind to N/NNW, you'll be rewarded with heavy, long-period groundswells that turn Papara into a raw, powerful reef break – but those days are few and far between.

December: Prime Time Returns

December kicks off the peak tourism season for good reason. Average swell height is 1.7m, period 11.4s, with a good spread of swell from SSE (21%), S (22%), SE (17%), and SSW (14%). Ideal wind reaches the highest percentage of the year at 38%. Offshore breezes from N (4.8%), NNE (6.9%), and NE (9.5%) are common and generally light (10-20 kph). The trades calm down significantly – E (21%) and ESE (16%) are still present but weaker. Expect clean, groomed waves on most days, with plenty of 1-1.5m fun waves and occasional bigger sets from distant storms. December is the month to plan your trip.
