Best Surf Season (October - March)

The northeast monsoon dominates this period, bringing consistent offshore winds from the N, NE, and ENE to Parada Santa. While the dominant swell direction is from the north during these months, the clean, glassy conditions make even small days worthwhile. Average wave heights hover around 1.0-1.2m with periods in the 7-8 second range, offering punchy, rideable surf. Occasional southern hemisphere groundswells can slip in, turning on the beach with good waves. This is the most reliable window for clean surf.

Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)

The transition months see a shift in the wind and swell patterns. In April and May, the northeast monsoon weakens and the southwest monsoon begins to build. This results in lighter, more variable winds, often with morning offshore conditions. The swell direction becomes more mixed, with increasing percentages from the SW, bringing better wave direction but shorter periods. September marks the reverse transition, with improving offshore wind frequency and the tail end of SW swell. These months offer the best chance of combining good swell direction with clean wind, although consistency drops off.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

The southwest monsoon takes full control during these months, generating consistent SW groundswell that is excellent in direction for Parada Santa. Average wave heights range from 0.8m to 1.1m with periods up to 7.2s, making for fun, rippable waves. However, the persistent onshore winds from the S, SSW, and SW ruin the surface quality most of the time. The surf is often choppy and messy. Only a lucky window with a brief wind shift can turn it on. This season is for those willing to accept blown-out conditions for the best swell direction.

December: King of Clean

December delivers the highest percentage of offshore wind of the year at 65%, primarily from NE and ENE. The swell is overwhelmingly from the NNE (56%) and N (29%), averaging 1.2m at 8.0s – solid and punchy with a touch of power. The period frequently reaches the 10-14s range, bringing powerful waves that can wrap into the bay. Despite the poor swell direction, the pristine offshore conditions allow skilled surfers to find workable sections. This is the month for longboarding in perfection or for chasing a rare SW groundswell that aligns with the glassy winds. December is the uncrowned king of clean surf at Parada Santa.
