Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic winter machine fires up and Parede sees its most consistent swell activity. While the dominant swell direction comes from the NW, the occasional low-pressure systems tracking further south push groundswell from the SW and WSW, which are the golden angles for this SSW-facing beach. During these months, average swell heights range from 2.2m to 2.5m with long periods averaging 12-13 seconds, meaning powerful lines when the direction aligns. The wind is offshore (N to NE) roughly 45-48% of the time, offering plenty of windows for clean conditions. November stands out as the month with the highest percentage of optimal SW swell, making it a prime time to score.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

As the seasons transition, the swell energy begins to drop off or ramp up. April sees average heights around 1.9m with a period of 11.1s, but the NW component still dominates. However, there is a slight increase in SW-directed swell compared to summer, and the wind remains offshore over 40% of the time. September marks the return of longer-period groundswell (10.5s) and an uptick in ideal wind (48%). The SW/WSW swell percentage is modest but can deliver fun, ripable waves when a low-pressure system dips into the eastern Atlantic.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

The summer months are characterized by smaller, shorter-period swell averaging 1.3-1.6m and periods under 10 seconds. The swell direction is overwhelmingly from the NW and NNW, offering very little direct energy for Parede's SSW orientation. Waves from the SW/WSW are extremely rare, often less than 1-2% of the time. While the wind is frequently offshore (especially in the mornings), the lack of quality swell means the spot often remains flat or small and weak. For surfers willing to hunt, occasional pulses from distant tropical storms or early season hurricanes can bring a rare SW swell, but consistency is low.

January: Roaring North Atlantic – A Game of Angles

The North Atlantic is in full fury this month, pumping an average swell of 2.5m at a juicy 13.1s. However, a whopping 23.3% of the swell comes from the NW, with another 20.6% from the WNW – directions that are not ideal for Parede's SSW orientation. Only about 3.4% of the waves approach from the optimal SW/WSW/SSW sector, but when they do, they can be powerful and clean. The wind is offshore 48% of the time, mostly from the N (14%) and NNE (9%), which keeps the surf smooth. The trick is to wait for a low-pressure system that tracks close enough to the Portuguese coast to swing the swell direction into your favor. When that happens, you get long-period, firing waves in the 1.5-2.5m range – worth the patience.
