Best Surf Season (January - March)

The first quarter of the year offers the most favorable, albeit still challenging, conditions at Pico Alto. While the data reveals a dominant onshore wind regime from the south and south-southwest, this period sees a slight uptick in the frequency of offshore winds from the north-northeast through east – the critical ingredient for transforming the consistent, long-period SSW groundswell into the famed, towering walls. The average wave period hovers around 13 seconds, indicating powerful, organized energy. When a strong high-pressure system sets up over the Andes and drains cool, offshore air down the coast, the normally wind-affected lineup can turn absolutely firing, offering rare windows of perfection.

Fair Surf Season (April - September)

As the Southern Hemisphere winter intensifies, the South Pacific storm track becomes fully active, generating the largest swells of the year. Average wave heights climb to 1.9m and periods remain consistently long (12.8-13.6s), with energy arriving almost exclusively from the SSW – an ideal direction for Pico Alto's SW-facing bathymetry. However, this is the season of persistent, moderate onshore southerly winds. The result is big, powerful, but often choppy and bumpy surf. The wave quality is compromised by the wind, creating a frustrating mix of peaky, unpredictable waves that demand a 'go-big-or-go-home' mentality. Dedicated chargers can find size, but clean conditions are extremely rare.

Low Surf Season (October - December)

The transition back to spring and early summer brings a noticeable drop in average swell height (down to 1.5m) and a slight decline in consistency. Although the wave period remains in the long-period range (12.8-13.2s) and the direction still favors the SSW, the onshore wind pattern from the S and SSW is virtually relentless, with the data showing zero percent ideal wind conditions. This period sees the worst combination of the year: decreasing swell energy coupled with persistent, quality-ruining onshore flow. While occasional pulses of southern hemi groundswell can still deliver fun, rippable waves, they are almost always accompanied by messy, onshore chop. This is the leanest window for surfers seeking quality at this world-class big-wave spot.

January: The Window of Hope

January opens the year with the highest (1%) chance of achieving that elusive offshore wind at Pico Alto. The swell is very consistent, averaging 1.4m with a dominant 13.0s period. The swell composition is overwhelmingly from the SSW (71.3%) and SW (27.5%), both prime angles for the spot. When the wind does cooperate from the NNE or E – often during early morning high pressure setups – the lineups can transform into a world-class canvas of long period, powerful waves. However, the prevailing wind is from the S (38.5%) and SSW (40.1%), typical of the stable subtropical high, which blows directly onshore and spoils the shape. Most days see a bumpy, challenging surface, but the rare glassy window makes January a month of hope for the patient.
