However, the ideal wind window (SSW–W) only clocks in around 22% of the time, meaning many days are marred by onshore NE breezes. Still, when the synoptic setup aligns — a deep Southern Ocean storm generating a long-period SSW swell and a trailing cold front ushering in crisp WSW winds — Pipe offers firing, pumping barrels in the 1.5–2.5 m range. This is the season for charging, but patience and careful forecasting are essential.
Fair Surf Season (March - May & September - November)
Spring and autumn are transitional periods where the strength and frequency of the Southern Ocean storms wax and wane. In March, April, and May, average swell heights hold at 2.0–2.2 m with periods of 11.4–12.2 seconds — still respectable but slightly less consistent than winter. The swell direction remains anchored in the SSW–SW quadrant, but you begin to see a slight uptick in ESE and SE energy (up to 3–5% in some months), offering occasional rippable waves when the wind plays ball. September, October, and November see a gradual decrease in swell size as spring progresses (2.3 m down to 2.1 m), with periods dropping from 11.7 s to 10.8 s. The wind pattern becomes more variable: the trade-wind-driven E–ESE flow strengthens (October records 16.8% E wind), which is onshore and quickly ruins wave quality. However, the percentage of ideal offshore wind hovers around 22–26%, and the occasional deep low still delivers a solid SSW swell. These are the months to pick your days — when a late-season storm coincides with a high-pressure system that ushers in a clean WSW breeze, Pipe can produce fun, good waves in the chest-to-head-high range.
Low Surf Season (December - February)
Summer brings a distinct lull in the Southern Ocean storm track. Average swell heights drop to 1.9–2.0 m and periods shorten to 10.7–11.0 seconds — still rideable, but lacking the power and consistency of winter. Swell direction is still predominantly SSW–SW, but you also see the highest percentage of E–ESE swell of the year (up to 3.3% E in January). This small but notable E component can occasionally produce fun-sized waves in the 0.5–1.5 m range when combined with a light offshore breeze from the SW–W quadrant. However, the dominant wind pattern is unfavorable: ENE, E, and ESE winds blow often (combined 30–38% of the time) and are directly onshore, quickly turning the lineup into a choppy, messy affair. The ideal offshore wind window remains around 25%, but the scores of E wind days mean that clean conditions are rare. When the stars do align — a weak southerly swell with a morning light SW breeze — Pipe can serve up micro to small waves suitable for groveling, but overall this is the low season for serious surf.
