Best Surf Season (December - February)

During the heart of the northern winter, Playa Bluff benefits from the strongest pulse of the Caribbean trade wind regime. Average swell heights climb to 1.3-1.4m with periods consistently in the 8-second range, offering plenty of punchy, rideable waves. More importantly, the frequency of favorable offshore winds from the SSW to W reaches its annual peak—hovering around 50% in December and January. When those SW shifts align with the dominant NE swell, the conditions turn on: clean faces, lined-up sets, and fun-sized barrels. This is the window to plan your trip.

Fair Surf Season (March - July & November)

As winter transitions into spring, the trade winds remain active but the swell starts to taper. March still delivers 1.2m average height, but ideal wind percentages drop to around 32%, meaning more days with onshore NW flow. From April through July, the swell slowly rebuilds from a low of 1.0m in April to a solid 1.2m by July, while the offshore wind window widens again—40-43% favorable from June onward. November stands out with a surprisingly high 50% ideal wind frequency and average swell of 1.0m, making it a sneaky good transitional month. During these months you'll need to be selective and watch for those SW offshore events to score clean waves.

Low Surf Season (August - October)

Late summer and early fall bring the lowest energy of the year to Playa Bluff. Average swell heights drop to 0.7m in September and October, with periods often under 8 seconds, producing weak, fat, and sometimes choppy conditions. The dominant swell direction remains NE, but the lack of size and period means well overhead days are rare. The wind is not the main issue—ideal wind percentages stay around 37-43%—but without any significant swell from the optimal NNW-W sector, the surf is mostly small. If you find yourself here during these months, a foam board or a longboard will be your best friend.

October: Lowest Swell, Greatest Variety

October hits the annual low with 0.7m at 7.0s, but the swell direction shows more variety than any other month. NE still dominates at 72%, but now N and NNE swell appears—N at 2.9%, NNE at 11.4%, and even some NNW at 4.9%. This mix can occasionally produce waves from better angles, though heights are still small. The wind is the most favorable of the low season: NW winds at 31%, NNW at 21%, and ideal W to SSW winds at 24% (the highest percentage of the year for that sector). This combination means that when a small NW swell coincides with a SW wind, you can score clean 1-1.5m waves on a good day. It's a month of potential rather than certainty.
