Best Surf Season (October - March)

The heart of the North Pacific winter delivers a consistent barrage of long-period, southwesterly swell to Playa Bruja from October through March. Strong extratropical storms spinning off the coast of Japan and the Aleutian Islands generate powerful, long-period groundswells (averaging 12-14s) that wrap perfectly into the southwest-facing beach. During these months, the dominant offshore wind regime from the N, NO, and ONO quadrants kicks in, with ideal wind percentages peaking at 55% in November and 52% in December. Combined with average wave heights in the fun-sized 0.8-1.1m range, this produces clean, rippable waves that hold shape well. Early winter (October-November) offers the most favorable wind-to-swell ratio, making it the prime window for quality sessions.

Fair Surf Season (July - September)

As the North Pacific storm track retreats northward, the summer months offer a shift in swell generation. The Southern Hemisphere winter kicks in, sending long-period SSW swell trains across the equator, predominantly from June through August. While the swell quality remains high (periods 13.6-14.3s, average heights 1.1-1.2m), the wind patterns become more variable. The trade winds and afternoon thermals often swing onshore from the SW-W, degrading wave surfaces. However, as autumn approaches in September, the offshore wind regime strengthens again (43% ideal wind) and the surf becomes more consistent. This is a transitional period where you can score clean, glassy conditions if you time the early morning windows.

Low Surf Season (April - June)

The spring transition is the trickiest time at Playa Bruja. The North Pacific storm activity fades, and the Southern Hemisphere swells have yet to fully mature. April, May, and June see the lowest percentages of ideal offshore wind (16-20%), with the wind shifting predominantly from the SW-WNW, often at speeds of 10-20 kph that create bumpy, onshore conditions. While the swell direction remains favorable (SSW-SW) and the wave heights actually peak at 1.1m with long periods achieving 14.4s in June, the constant onshore wind severely limits quality time. It's not that the swell is absent—it's that the wind rarely aligns. For the dedicated surfer, early mornings when the land breeze briefly provides clean windows are the only shot at scoring.

May: Southern Hemisphere Swell Dominates

May is the month where the Southern Hemisphere fully takes over, with an astonishing 77.2% of the swell coming from the SSW. Average height holds at 1.1m, period at 14.4s—the longest of the year. A full 45.6% of the swell is in the 1-1.5m range, with 4.9% reaching 1.5-2m, offering plenty of power. But the wind is the great equalizer: ideal offshore wind is only 17%. The wind rose shows a strong signature from the SE (7.9%), SSE (6.5%), and S (4.3%), along with W (17.7%) and WNW (16.7%)—all of which bring onshore conditions to this southwest-facing beach. Surfable waves exist, but you'll need to fight bumpy, lumpy surfaces. Early morning glass-offs are rare but golden.
