Best Surf Season (December - April)

Playa Carmen hits its stride during the heart of the dry season, when the North Pacific high-pressure system strengthens and funnels consistent offshore winds out of the N, NNE, NE, and ENE right into the southwest-facing beach. The trade winds relax, creating glassy morning conditions with average swell heights sitting between 1.0-1.3m and long periods of 12.5-14.1s. Swell trains from the deep Southern Hemisphere roll in primarily from the SSW and SW, wrapping beautifully into the bay. This is prime time for clean, rippable waves in the fun 1-1.5m range, with occasional pumping days breaking the 1.5m mark.

Fair Surf Season (November & May)

November and May are transitional months straddling the shift between dry and wet seasons. In November, the offshore wind window is still favorable about half the time, and average swell stays solid at 1.3m (12.5s) with a healthy mix of SSW and SW energy from early-season storms. May sees a gradual increase in onshore breezes (ideal wind only 38% of the time), but the swell kicks up to 1.4m with a longer 14.2s period, offering powerful lines when the wind aligns. These months are a gamble, but when the stars align, you can score uncrowded, clean waves.

Low Surf Season (June - October)

The rainy season brings the Intertropical Convergence Zone overhead, shifting wind patterns to predominantly onshore flows from the S, SSW, SW, and WSW — exactly the wind that ruins wave quality at Playa Carmen. Ideal surf wind drops to 30-43%, and despite average swell heights holding at a solid 1.4-1.5m with periods around 13.0-13.8s from persistent Southern Ocean storms, the chop and bump make conditions challenging. The few clean windows occur during brief tempestades or early-morning lulls, when a lucky south pulse lines up with a light offshore breeze. This is the season for the dedicated, not the casual surfer.

December: Return to Dry Season Glory

December kicks off the prime surf season with the highest ideal wind percentage of the year at 61%. Average swell height is 1.1m with a 12.5s period, a touch smaller than mid-year but still plenty for fun waves. Swell comes predominantly from SSW (84.8%) and SW (12.0%), with 57.7% of SSW waves in the 1-1.5m “fun” range. Winds blow consistently from the offshore quadrants: NNE (20.5%) and N (12.0%) lead the way, with speeds mostly 10-20kph, creating clean, groomed conditions. Periods of stronger NNE breeze (20-30kph at 3.2%) add extra push without harming quality.
