Best Surf Season (December - March)

The Caribbean winter trade winds set up a dominant NE swell machine, funneling consistent, mid-period swell into Playa Cocles. Average wave heights hover in the 1.0–1.2m range, with periods around 8 seconds, providing plenty of punchy, fun-sized waves. Critically, this period also brings the highest percentage of favorable wind conditions — nearly half the time, you'll find light southerly to southwesterly winds grooming the swell to perfection. The combination of reliable NE groundswell and occasional offshore breezes creates some of the year's best surf.

Fair Surf Season (April & November)

During the transitional months of April and November, the NE swell persists but begins to weaken in intensity, with average heights dropping to the 0.8–0.9m range. The wind regime becomes more variable as the Intertropical Convergence Zone shifts. Favorable offshore winds occur less frequently, around 30–39% of the time, but when they align, the waves remain clean and rideable. These shoulder months offer a quieter lineup with still plenty of fun to be had.

Low Surf Season (May - October)

The heart of the rainy season brings a distinct drop in both swell size and wind quality. Average swell heights dwindle to 0.6–0.9m, and periods shorten into the 6–8 second realm, producing weaker, more disorganized waves. The wind clock is dominated by strong NE trade flow, which howls directly onshore at Playa Cocles, chopping up the surface. Favorable offshore winds become a rare commodity, dropping to just 20–28%. While the occasional long-period southern swell can sneak in, the overall consistency and quality bottom out during these months.

October: Transition's Glimmer

October remains poor overall, but there are signs of change. Average wave height is still low at 0.6m with a short period of 6.6 seconds. NE swell fraction drops to 71.8%, while contributions from N (2.9%), NNE (10.5%), and NNW (2.7%) increase, hinting at the onset of more varied swell directions. Favorable wind hits a yearly low of 20%, with NW (26.3%) and NNW (16.1%) dominating. However, the shift in swell azimuth suggests that as the ITCZ moves south, better swell windows may open. Still, mostly small and choppy.
