Best Surf Season (December - March)

The heart of the North Atlantic winter delivers the goods at Playa de la Canteria. As deep low-pressure systems track across the North Atlantic, they generate powerful long-period swell trains from the N to ENE windows that wrap directly into this NNE-facing beach. Average swell heights hover around 1.6m to 1.7m, with periods frequently exceeding 12 seconds, translating into punchy, well-ordered lines. Critically, this is also the period when the percentage of ideal offshore wind days peaks at 7-11%, thanks to occasional bursts of S to WSW airflow ahead of approaching cold fronts. When the stars align, you get crisp offshore winds grooming steep, hollow waves – those are the sessions you came for.

Fair Surf Season (October - November & April - May)

Shoulder months offer a mixed bag. October and November see the autumn storm track ramping up, producing solid swell with average periods around 11-12s and heights of 1.3-1.5m. However, the wind is less consistent, with ideal conditions only occurring 9-10% of the time. Spring months (April-May) bring a noticeable drop in period (10.6s to 9.1s) and height (1.5m to 1.3m). While the swell direction remains favorable from NNW to NNE, the dominant N to NNE winds become increasingly onshore, making it harder to find clean conditions. Still, a passing high-pressure ridge can bring light S winds and fun-sized waves.

Low Surf Season (June - September)

Summer is the leanest time for consistent surf. The North Atlantic storm track shifts north, significantly weakening swell production. Average wave periods drop to 7.3-9.5s, resulting in choppy, underpowered waves most days. The swell continues to arrive from the N to NNE quadrants, but heights are often in the 1.2-1.4m range with a high percentage of small, groveling waves. Compounding the issue, the wind regime becomes overwhelmingly dominated by N to NNE flow (on/onshore for this spot), with ideal offshore wind days plummeting to 0-4%. Occasional weak sea breezes or thermal winds might offer brief windows, but overall, expect mushy, wind-affected conditions. However, if a rare southern-hemisphere swell or a tropical system sends a pulse from the NE, the spot can come alive for a few hours.

December: Winter Premiere

December kicks off the peak winter season with authority. Average swell height is 1.6m and the period is 12.4s, offering powerful, long-period groundswell. Swell directions are dominated by NNW (24.7%), NNE (22.2%), and a significant portion from NW (12.3%) and WNW (7%), all of which wrap well. The ideal wind percentage reaches 11%, the highest of the year. This is driven by the frequent passage of deep Atlantic lows that swing westerly winds across the coast. When a low is to the north or northwest, the wind often turns SSW to WSW, creating pristine, offshore grooming on a solid swell. The combination of size, period, and occasional offshore wind makes December a peak month for expert sessions. The storm track is in full force, and if the NAO is negative, expect even more consistent swells.
