Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roar to life during autumn and winter, and Playa de la Garita feels the pulse of powerful, long-period groundswells generated by low-pressure systems deep in the Atlantic. Swell heights consistently average 1.5-1.7m with periods often exceeding 11 seconds, producing clean, punchy lines that wrap around the island's northeast cape. While the dominant trade winds from the NNE-NE quadrant blow side-onshore, occasional setups with west-northwest to southwest winds (WSW-W-WNW-NW) deliver pristine offshore conditions. The percentage of ideal wind peaks in October at 18%, making it the prime month for combining solid swell with glassy texture. From November through January, storm tracks are active, offering the largest and most powerful surf, albeit with wind battles. March still holds good size and period, with a slight uptick in ideal wind to 13%.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

April brings a transition: the average swell height drops slightly to 1.5m and period shortens to 10.6s, but ideal wind improves to 16%. This month often features a mix of lingering winter groundswell and new spring systems, with lighter winds making it easier to score clean waves, especially when a W or NW flow sets up. September marks the beginning of the autumn ramp-up: swell height is still modest at 1.2m, but period increases to 9.5s as early-season storms begin to form. Ideal wind is 15%, and the drop in strong trade wind frequency allows for more frequent clean conditions. Both months offer a decent chance of fun waves without the winter crowds.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

May through August is the quietest period for Playa de la Garita. The Azores High dominates, suppressing storm activity in the North Atlantic. Swell heights average 1.2-1.4m, but periods drop sharply to 7.3-9.1s, resulting in weaker, choppier waves. The trade winds are relentless: from June to August, the combined N-NNE wind distribution exceeds 70%, and ideal offshore wind from the west plummets to just 3-5% in July and August. When swells do arrive, they are often short-period windswells from the north that struggle to wrap in cleanly. This is the season for longboard learners and small-wave fun, but serious surfers will want to look elsewhere. May sees slightly better ideal wind (17%) but still small, short-period waves; it's the best of a poor bunch.

July: Peak Trade Wind Torment

July is the most challenging month for surf at Playa de la Garita. The average swell height is 1.4m, but the period is a meager 7.3s, indicating predominantly short-period windswell. The swell direction narrows to almost entirely NNE (61.2%) and N (29.9%) - the same direction as the relentless trade winds. Ideal wind frequency crashes to a mere 3%, the lowest of the year. The NNE trades blow over 60% of the time, often exceeding 30 kph, creating choppy, messy, onshore conditions. When swell does arrive, it's rarely rideable due to the cross-offshore wind from the same direction. Any surf session will be a battle against the elements. July is a time to explore other spots on the island that are more protected or to take a break from surfing.
