Summer settles in with a noticeable drop in swell energy. Average heights hover around 1.0-1.2m and periods dip into the 8-10s range, making for smaller, punchier waves better suited to grovelling boards. The swell is still predominantly from the NW, but the wind picture is more mixed. Thermal gradients often kick up afternoon onshore breezes from the W-NW, chopping up the surf. However, early mornings with light offshore winds from the E-SE quadrant can still offer clean, fun-sized waves, especially on a WNW swell. This is the time for longboarders and beginners to enjoy the ocean.

December: Winter Peak

December rounds out the year with full-on winter conditions. Average swell height is 2.0m and the period sits at 12.5s, producing powerful, long-period groundswell. The dominant direction is NW at 35.6%, closely followed by WNW at 19.6%, indicating a solid mix of westerly components. The wind is ideal 47% of the time, with favorable E and ESE flows (7.9% and 7.0%). This month can deliver XL-sized waves when a deep low-pressure system stalls off the coast. Patience is key, as cleanest windows often occur between frontal passages. When it aligns, the waves are world-class.
