Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic storm track roars to life during autumn and winter, delivering consistent, powerful swells to this north-facing beach. From October through March, average wave heights range from 1.5m to 2.0m with periods averaging 11-13 seconds, producing solid, punchy to powerful surf. The proportion of ideal offshore wind (from the south quadrants – SSW, S, SW) peaks at 33-41%, meaning frequent clean conditions. The dominant swell directions – NW, WNW, and NNW – align perfectly with the beach's northern exposure, wrapping in with size and energy. Expect pumping days with long-period groundswells when the Azores High retreats and low-pressure systems march across the Atlantic.

Fair Surf Season (April, May, September)

Transitional months bring a mix of leftover winter energy and early summer stagnation. April and May see average heights drop to 1.2-1.4m and periods shorten to 9.8-10.7s, still offering fun-sized waves on the better days. However, ideal wind percentages slide to 18-23%, as springtime northerly winds become more frequent, often adding chop. September marks the beginning of the autumn ramp-up, with average swell climbing back to 1.3m and periods to 10.3s, and ideal wind improving to 21%. While not as consistent as winter, these months can deliver clean, rippable surf if a south wind coincides with a solid NW swell.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer is the quietest period for Playa de Meron, dominated by a strong Azores High that blocks Atlantic storm tracks. Average wave heights hover around 1.0m with periods of 8.7-9.1s, producing mostly small, weak, and often choppy surf. The wind is ideal only 9-12% of the time, as persistent northerly breezes (N, NNE, NE) blow directly onshore, ruining wave quality. Occasional weak groundswells from the NNW can offer tiny, mushy waves for longboarders, but overall the conditions are marginal. This is a time to explore other spots or enjoy the beach for a swim rather than serious surfing.

October: Full Autumn – Consistent Swell and Better Winds

October is a standout month as the North Atlantic storm track reawakens with a vengeance. Average swell height rises to 1.5m and period to 11.2s, producing powerful, long-period surf. Dominant swell directions are NW (49.7%), NNW (17.3%), and WNW (14.1%), with a healthy chunk of waves in the 1.5-2.5m range (13.5% and 8.6% from NW respectively). The ideal wind percentage jumps to 33%, with offshore flows from S (5.9%), SSW (4.3%), and SW (2.2%) providing ample clean days. Onshore winds from W (7.4%) and WNW (12.7%) still occur, but they are often associated with the passage of cold fronts that later swing the wind to the south. This is the start of the prime surf season, where the combination of consistent NW swell and frequent offshore winds creates some of the best waves of the year – expect pumping, firing conditions on the right days.
