Playa Dominical hits its stride during the Northern Hemisphere winter when the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) shifts south, allowing the northeast trade winds to blow consistently offshore across the bay. This is the epitome of dry-season surfing: N, NNE, and NE winds groom the wave faces, while long-period groundswells from the Southern Ocean and Tasman Sea wrap in from the SSW to SW sectors. Average wave heights hover around 1.0–1.1m with periods of 12–13 seconds, producing clean, rippable walls. The percentage of ideal wind (37–42%) is at its annual peak, making this the go-to window for consistent, high-quality surf with minimal wind chop.

As spring arrives, the ITCZ migrates northward, weakening the offshore wind regime. April sees ideal wind drop to 32% and May to 26%, as S, SSW, and SW onshore breezes become more frequent. However, the swell trade-off is significant: average heights climb to 1.2–1.3m and periods lengthen to 14 seconds, thanks to stronger Southern Hemisphere winter storms firing up. While mornings still offer occasional offshore windows, afternoons often get bumpy. This transition period delivers punchy, powerful swell but demands careful session timing to avoid the afternoon onshore drift.

Low Surf Season (June - November)

The rainy season brings a fundamental shift in wind patterns: onshore flow from the SW and WSW dominates, pushing ideal wind percentages below 25% and down to 21% in October. Despite this, swell is far from flat—in fact, average heights reach 1.4m from June through September with periods of 13–14 seconds, fueled by intensifying Southern Ocean storm tracks and the occasional tropical disturbance. The challenge is that these waves often arrive with a messy, side-to-onshore texture, reducing quality. Surfable waves still exist, especially during early morning lulls or post-frontal wind shifts, but consistent perfection is rare. September: Transitional Power

September still packs a punch with an average swell height of 1.4m and a period of 13.0 seconds. Swell direction shifts slightly: SSW (71%) and SW (28%) with a growing WSW component (1.3%) as storm tracks occasionally shift. The 1.5–2m range accounts for 19% of wave heights. Ideal wind remains low at 24%. Onshore winds from the S, SSW, SW, and WSW are frequent, but September also sees the first signs of a slight increase in offshore wind from the north (2.2%).
