February stands out with the highest percentage of clean, offshore conditions (36%), making it the prime time for groomed, rippable waves. Fair Surf Season (April - July)

As the dry season transitions into the early rainy season, offshore winds become less reliable, dropping to around 27% in April and the low 20s by May. However, the Southern Hemisphere winter comes alive, pumping more powerful SSW swell across the Pacific. Average wave heights climb to 1.3-1.4m with periods often exceeding 14 seconds. These are the months for bigger, heavier waves, but you'll have to pick your windows carefully—early mornings or late afternoons when the thermal gradient tilts northward. Just before the afternoon sea breeze kicks in, quality sessions can materialise.

Low Surf Season (August - November)

The height of the rainy season brings persistent onshore winds from the SW and W quadrants, dominating over 80% of the time. Offshore wind days become rare, dropping to as low as 18% in October. Swell energy remains high—still 1.4m on average with long periods—but the accompanying wind chop and cross-breezes often spoil the surface texture. Look for brief windows following cold fronts or tropical waves that shift the wind north of east. October and November can produce the occasional epic session when a synoptic-scale low aligns with a light offshore flow, but consistency is poor.

February: Prime Time for Clean Lines

February edges out as the month with the highest likelihood of ideal conditions—36% offshore flow from the N quadrant. Swell heights tick up slightly to a 1.0m average, but the period extends to 13.1s, adding more power to the punch. The SSW direction dominates (88%), with 30% of waves in the 1-1.5m sweet spot. With light winds and long-period energy, the waves become highly groomed, offering excellent shoulder-high walls that are perfect for carving. This is the month to plan a trip around; the combination of reliable offshores and consistent groundswell from the Southern Ocean makes for some of the cleanest, most fun surf of the year.
