Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic comes alive during these months, delivering the most consistent and powerful swell of the year to the Canary Islands. While the dominant swell direction at Playa Honda remains from the north-northwest, the south-facing orientation of the beach means that these large, long-period groundswells often wrap around the island or are refracted into the bay, especially when they have a slight southerly component. The wind regime shifts favorably, with high-pressure systems over the Azores channeling cool, offshore breezes from the north and northeast. This combination can produce clean, rippable waves in the 1-1.5m range, with occasional firing days when the swell peaks at 1.5-2.5m. The best windows occur when a storm track dips south, sending groundswell from the south-southwest – a rare but magical event that aligns perfectly with this coastline.

Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)

Transitional periods bring a noticeable drop in both swell size and period as the North Atlantic storm track retreats northward. The average swell height decreases to around 1.2-1.5m, and periods shorten to 8-10s, resulting in a mix of windswell and background groundswell. Offshore north winds remain fairly frequent, especially in April and September, but the wave quality is often inconsistent and smaller. These months offer fun, groveling conditions on good days, but expect plenty of small, weak days in between. September stands out with the highest percentage of ideal wind conditions (28%), making it a hidden gem for clean, long-period groundswell that occasionally arrives from the south.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer is the quietest period for Playa Honda. The swell drops to its annual minimum, averaging just 1.2-1.4m with short periods (7-8s), and the wind patterns become problematic. The persistent trade winds blow strongly from the north and northeast, but they are often too intense, creating choppy, messy conditions. The ideal offshore wind percentage plummets to single digits (4-9%), meaning most days are blown out. The rare south swell that does arrive is quickly ruined by onshore winds. This is a time for longboard cruises or travel elsewhere – waves are small, weak, and generally not worth the paddle out.

December: Winter in Full Swing

December brings the peak winter pattern: average swell height 1.6m, period 12.4s. The swell direction is a mix of north (NNE 22.2%, NNW 24.7%, N 12.1%, with more spread to the east and south). This month actually shows the highest percentage of south component swells (S 0.5%, SSW 0.6%) of any month – still tiny, but a glimmer of hope. The wind ideal percentage is 20%, with strong offshore winds from NE (21.8%) and NNE (17%). The combination of powerful groundswell and offshore flow makes for excellent surfing potential, especially on days when a hint of south in the swell arrives. Wave heights are mostly 1-1.5m (fun to solid) with a good number of 1.5-2.5m sets. December is a prime month for chasing quality waves at Playa Honda.
