Best Surf Season (December - April)

During these months, the North Pacific high-pressure system strengthens, promoting a consistent flow of offshore northerly to northeasterly trade winds across Costa Rica. This aligns perfectly with Playa Jaco's southwest exposure, grooming the swell into clean, well-shaped lines. Swell from deep Southern Hemisphere low-pressure systems arrives with long periods (12–14+ seconds) and heights ranging from fun 1–1.5m to pumping 2m+ on the best days. The average wave period hovers around 12–14 seconds, delivering powerful, rideable surf. January through March are the prime months with ideal wind conditions over 40% of the time, offering glassy mornings and offshore breezes that hold up the faces. This is the time to score classic Jaco peaks from head-high to overhead.

Fair Surf Season (May and November)

As the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) migrates northward, the trade winds weaken and become more variable. May and November represent transitional months where the swell remains ample (average heights 1.2–1.3m) and periods are still long (12–14s), but the wind window narrows. Northerly offshore winds become less frequent, replaced by lighter onshore sea breezes or southerly winds. Surf quality is still good, especially in the early mornings before the wind picks up. These months can deliver excellent waves between storm fronts, but consistency drops compared to the prime season.

Low Surf Season (June - October)

The heart of the wet season brings persistent southwest to west winds, which are directly onshore for Playa Jaco. Despite the fact that swell heights peak at 1.4m on average (and occasionally reach 2–2.5m+) with long periods, the constant onshore flow chops up the waves, making them sectiony and difficult. Ideal offshore wind percentages drop to 18–23%, meaning only sporadic clean windows, often from brief northerly outflow events or early morning calms. Southern Hemisphere swell is still pumping, but you'll need to watch local wind forecasts closely for a clean session. Most days are blown out, making this the least reliable season for quality surf at Jaco.

November: Transition Back to Cleaner Conditions

November signals the beginning of the transition back to the dry season. Ideal wind climbs to 25%, with N and NNE winds starting to pick up (3.1% combined). The average swell height drops to 1.2m, and the period is 12.4 seconds – still long enough for quality. SSW swell dominates (91.6%), with 70.1% in the 1–1.5m range and 8.4% in 1.5–2m. SW contributions decrease to 6.8%. The wind rose shows a reduction in strong onshore flows; instead, lighter SE to S winds prevail (11.4% SE, 10.2% SSE). This means more manageable surfaces, especially in the mornings. November often delivers glassy dawn patrol sessions with fun, rippable waves from waist to head-high. As the North Pacific high re-establishes, expect increasingly consistent offshore winds as the month progresses.
