Best Surf Season (November - March)

The heart of the Central American dry season brings a magical blend of consistent, quality swell and reliable offshore winds to Playa Langosta. From November through March, the North Pacific’s storm track shifts south, firing long-period groundswells into the region. November and December stand out with the highest percentage of ideal wind conditions (75%), often from a crisp ENE or NE direction that wraps around the headlands to groom the wave faces. Swell directions during these months are a healthy mix, with a strong South-Southwest component that aligns closely with the beach’s West-Southwest exposure, delivering waves in the fun 1-1.5m range with periods averaging 12-13 seconds. January through March maintain solid swell, though the wind becomes slightly more variable, with the trade winds occasionally strengthening. Still, when the high pressure over the Caribbean locks in, Langosta serves up clean, rippable lines that make this the prime window for surf travel.

Fair Surf Season (April - July)

As the dry season transitions into the green season, the swell dynamics shift. April through July see the Intertropical Convergence Zone creep north, bringing a surge in powerful 14-second plus groundswells from the deep South Pacific. While the wave heights remain in the solid 1.3-1.5m range and the periods are long, the dominant swell direction becomes more South-Southwest (SSW), which hits Playa Langosta at a slightly less favorable angle than the optimal SW-WSW window. The wind regime also changes: the reliable offshore trades weaken, and the frequency of onshore breezes from the West and Southwest increases, especially in May and June. However, July bucks the trend with an impressive 80% ideal wind score, often from the Northeast, making it a hidden gem within the fair season. Expect punchy waves on the best days, but the consistency drops off and the session-to-session variability goes up.

Low Surf Season (August - October)

The late green season is the quietest period for surf at Playa Langosta. August through October coincide with the peak of the Central American rainy season, when the wind patterns become fickle and the swell energy takes on a more confused character. Swell remains present—averaging 1.5m with periods around 13 seconds—but the direction swings almost exclusively into the SSW (up to 80% of the time), which is far from ideal for this West-Southwest facing beach. On top of that, the percentage of ideal wind conditions drops to its lowest point of the year, with September and October seeing only 52% and 55% respectively. The wind often swings into the West or Southwest, creating choppy and messy conditions. While the occasional tropical storm can spin up a pulse of long-period SW swell, these months are a gamble. For the dedicated surfer, the best strategy is to watch for a crisp offshore flow and a window of cleaner groundswell, but overall, this is the time to explore other pursuits or other breaks in the area.

May: Green Season Beginnings

May signals the start of the green season, and the swell characteristics change noticeably. Average wave height increases slightly to 1.4m with a long 14.2-second period, indicating distant storm sources. The swell direction is almost exclusively South-Southwest (81.4%), with a small Southwest component (13.8%). This narrow window means the beach isn’t catching the full energy—much of the swell passes by or wraps in weakly. The wind becomes more variable: ideal wind sits at 60%, but the trade winds weaken significantly. The dominant wind directions are from the East and Southeast (E 7.9%, ESE 7.2%, SE 8.1%), which are not directly offshore for this West-Southwest facing beach. Onshore Westerlies become more common, leading to choppy conditions. Surf quality drops, but when a strong offshore from the Northeast kicks in (11.4%), the waves can become fun-sized and clean. May is best for surfing in the early mornings before the sea breeze picks up.
