Best Surf Season (June - September)

The summer wet season breathes new life into Playa Maria Chiquita, as the prevailing NE trade winds relax and give way to more variable, often southerly, winds. This shift brings a significant increase in offshore wind frequency, with ideal conditions (S to SSW) occurring up to 30% of the time. Swell heights average 1.0-1.1m with periods around 8s – offering fun, rippable waves that are groomed clean by the offshore breeze. While not huge, these are the most reliable clean surf windows of the year.

Fair Surf Season (May, October, November)

Transitional months sit between regimes, mixing the fading winter trades and building summer patterns. Offshore wind potential remains decent (17-25%), but swell energy is often lower, averaging 0.6-0.9m. May sees the last gasps of small NE swell, while October and November gradually reintroduce northerly pulse energy. Surf is generally small to fun-sized and requires patience for clean sets.

Low Surf Season (December - April)

The dry season is dominated by the relentless NE trade winds, blowing onshore (from N to NE) over 85% of the time. This creates choppy, messy conditions that degrade wave quality despite the arrival of larger swell (1.3-1.5m average height). The trade winds are powered by strong high-pressure systems over the Atlantic, making offshore wind windows extremely rare (0-3%). Only the very occasional cold front or trough can swing winds south, offering brief, glassy sessions, but overall it's a season to wait out if you value clean waves.

March: A Faint Glimmer of Change

As the dry season wanes, the trade wind intensity begins to ease slightly. NNE winds still dominate at 64.3%, but lighter speeds (10-20kph) become more frequent. Swell from NE (69.1%) and NNE (25.4%) provides an average height of 1.3m with 7.7s period – punchy but wind-affected. The first hints of southerly wind appear, pushing the ideal wind percentage to 1%. Still, most days are onshore, and only a small fraction of swell arrives from the optimal NNW (1.6%). Look for shallow lows swinging south to deliver a clean hour or two.
