Best Surf Season (February - April)

Peru's austral autumn delivers the most promising blend of consistent, long-period SSW swell and the highest frequency of offshore wind windows for Playa Norte. March stands out as the apex month, with a notable 11 percent of the time offering ideal conditions -- the best odds you'll get all year. During these months, average swell heights range from 1.5m to 1.7m, with periods often exceeding 13 seconds, bringing powerful and well-formed lines when the wind cooperates. The dominant wind regime still favors onshore flow from the south and southwest, but the increased occurrence of light offshore breezes from the ENE and E quadrants creates short-lived but excellent surf.

Fair Surf Season (May - August)

As the Southern Hemisphere winter deepens, the South Pacific storm track fires up, producing the largest average swell of the year -- typically 1.8m to 1.9m with periods in the 13-second range. This is prime time for size and power, but the trade-off is severe: onshore winds from the SSW and SW dominate over 80% of the time, making clean waves a rarity. The 'ideal surfing' percentage plummets to just 1-4 percent. Surfers will encounter heavy, bumpy conditions more often than not, but those who chase the rare cold-front passages or high-pressure setups can score pumping, albeit challenging, surf.

Low Surf Season (September - January)

From spring through early summer, the combination of declining swell energy and persistently poor wind creates the most difficult period for quality surf. Average heights drop from 1.9m in September back to 1.4m by January, and the ideal wind window shrinks to a meager 1-3 percent. The swell direction remains locked in from the SSW, but the wind direction is overwhelmingly onshore from the same quadrant, leading to messy, choppy conditions. November and December are particularly quiet, with smaller, less organized swell. Occasional early-season offshore events do occur, but they are brief and difficult to time.

June: Winter's Full Force

June marks the peak of swell size with an average of 1.9m. The period is still a solid 13.2 seconds. The SSW direction contributes 76% of the swell, but for the first time, a notable 12% comes from the S, adding a bit of directional variety. The 1.5-2m range (40%) and 2-2.5m range (22%) dominate. This is big, powerful surf. The wind, however, is a near-constant onshore blow: S at 38%, SSW at 39% – most of the time at speeds between 0-10 kph but with a significant 17% in the 10-20 kph range from the SSW. Ideal wind plummets to just 2 percent. Expect large, windy, and challenging conditions. Only the most dedicated go-out-when-it's-ugly crew will find the rare clean set that makes the trip worthwhile.
