Best Surf Season (December - March)

The heart of the North Pacific winter drives a relentless parade of extratropical storms across the mid-latitudes, sending long-period groundswell pulses toward the Panamanian coast. In December and January, the trade wind inversion strengthens over the Caribbean, funneling cool, dense air southward and establishing a dominant offshore flow from the N and NNW quadrants. This combination delivers clean, lined-up swell with average heights in the 1-1.5m range and periods climbing past 10 seconds. February sees a slight uptick in period (10.5s average) while March pushes into the 12-second range, with SSW swell becoming more prominent. The wind is consistently offshore 51-77% of the time, making these months the most reliable window for quality waves at Playa Raya.

Fair Surf Season (April - November)

As the Intertropical Convergence Zone shifts northward, the synoptic pattern transitions. April still benefits from a healthy 67% offshore wind frequency, and the average period peaks at 13.7s. However, the predominant swell shifts to SSW (59% of total), bringing fun, rippable waves in the 0.5-1.5m range. During May and June, the southern hemisphere winter begins to generate consistent long-period SSW swell (14-14.1s average), but the wind regime becomes more fickle, with ideal conditions only 50-55% of the time. November marks the return of stronger offshore flows (59% ideal) as the dry season begins to reassert itself, but wave heights drop slightly to an average of 1.0m. These months offer occasional gems when a well-aligned low-pressure system in the South Pacific sends a clean pulse of SSW groundswell under a brief northerly wind event.

Low Surf Season (July - October)

The core of the wet season brings the worst consistency to Playa Raya. During these months, the trade winds weaken and the prevailing flow turns onshore from the SW and WSW, pushing the ocean into a messy, wind-chopped surface. Surprisingly, the swell remains very consistent from the SSW (over 92% of the time), with long periods (13.2-13.5s), but the wind is ideal only 37-41% of the time. September and October are especially challenging; the average wave period is high, but endless onshore winds from the south and southwest ruin the wave shape, leaving most days with small, bumpy rollers. Only a fleeting clearing wind from the north or land breeze can salvage a session. This is the time to be patient and watch the forecast closely for windows of clean offshore flow.

May: Southern Hemisphere Groundswell Arrives in Force

May is a month of stark contrasts. The swell is now almost exclusively from the SSW (85.9%), with 45.1% in the 1-1.5m range and 35.4% in the 0.5-1m range. The average period stays high at 14.1s, delivering powerful, long-range swell. However, the wind becomes more of a gamble, with ideal offshore conditions only 55% of the time. Northerly winds (N 13.9%, NNE 8.9%) are much weaker, while onshore southwesterly winds (SW 12.1%, WSW 10.2%) increase. The dominant south winds bring bump to the waves, making the early morning or evening wind shifts key for surf sessions. When the wind does turn offshore, the waves are consistent, clean, and offer some of the longest rides of the year. Look for synoptic setups where a high-pressure system lingers over the Caribbean to lock in those north winds.
